It was the late, great Desmond Tutu that said, “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” At a time when solidarity feels somewhat broken and our physicality under threat from Artificial Intelligence, we explored the notion of unity – how connection endures even as the pace of change unsettles our understanding of what it means to be human.
Inspired by the idea of what coming together could mean for us all, we filled these pages with a certain kind of realness: the immense power of in-real-life congregating, collaborating, choirs, protests, dance floors, dinner tables and bodies communing on the beach. We honour the potency of the song and how writing your own can build worlds and communities, bringing disparate people together, and illuminate how humans are made for love, the role of hope in consolidation – ‘why fight when you can unite?’ – and truly working together for the good of all.
Making this issue also bought us closer together. It restored our faith in the power of a shared vision over something more singular, it reminded us that we grow – not when everything goes well and to plan, but in the face of adversity – and that true benevolence is about how well we are able to disagree and yet continue to care for each other.
Unity isn’t about sameness, it's about connecting with, and in spite of, our differences. Rather than separate us, it is the realisation of our need for each other. After all, there’s a warm glow to togetherness and we can surely not heal alone?
This issue is proof that a little altruism can go a long way but, in some cases, it can be everything.
Peace.
