The ‘Social Network’ sequel officially has a name

Jeremy Strong, Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison tapped for 'Social Network' sequel

It’s been more than a decade since The Social Network cracked open the mythology of Silicon Valley and reshaped how we viewed the creation of Facebook. And now, the story isn’t over. Aaron Sorkin, who penned the original Oscar-winning screenplay, is officially back – this time not just as writer, but also as director – for a follow-up feature titled The Social Reckoning.

And if Sorkin’s return wasn’t enough to get you excited, the cast lineup certainly will be. Previously reported frontrunners Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison, and Jeremy Allen White are now confirmed, with Strong set to play Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. They’ll be joined by Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin, Gbenga Akinnagbe, and Anna Lambe.

Updates: new casting Aannounced

According to Deadline’s latest exclusive, Aidan Laprete (The Pitt, Drivers Ed), Kelley Pereira (The Runarounds), and Nelson Franklin (Veep) have officially joined the cast. Their roles remain under wraps, but they’ll be appearing alongside the already-announced leads.

When will it be released?

We now have official confirmation that The Social Reckoning is set for release on 9 October 2026.

What is the plot?

Unlike a traditional sequel, The Social Reckoning will not revisit the dorm-room beginnings of Facebook. Instead, it examines the real-world consequences of the platform’s transformation into one of the most powerful – and controversial – forces in the world.

The narrative will centre on whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), who, as a young Facebook engineer, enlists Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to help expose the social network’s most closely guarded secrets.

The film’s script is reportedly informed by The Facebook Files investigative series from The Wall Street Journal and may also touch on Facebook’s role in the events of 6 January 2021. Speaking on The Town podcast in 2024, Sorkin remarked bluntly: “I blame Facebook for January 6… You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”
