Robert Pattinson might be getting ready to drop an album

Robert Pattinson has already given us more identities than most actors could dream of. He’s been the brooding vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight. He’s stepped into the cape and cowl as Gotham’s Batman. And now? He just might be adding musician to that résumé.

Yep, you read that right. Pattinson has officially registered seven songs with ASCAP (that’s the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). And the titles alone feel like they belong on the coolest indie rock playlist: Bent Out That Midnight Day, Best Friend, Fascinate, Fell Off, Green Light, Waiting on Me, and Witness (You See Me). He’s listed as both performer and songwriter, collaborating once again with his longtime friend Marcus Foster – a name you will already be familiar with if you're one of the die-hard fans who've listened to any of Robert Pattison's open mic night music from 2008.

Why is he releasing music?

Now, this isn’t completely out of left field. True Pattinson fans remember his smoky vocals on the Twilight soundtrack with Never Think and Let Me Sign, the latter co-written by Foster. He’s also quietly contributed music to films like How to Be and High Life. But this new move feels different — like he’s finally ready to share a bigger body of work.

If an album does materialise, Pattinson will be treading some very rare ground. Believe it or not, the last Batman actor to really put music out there was Adam West way back in 1966, with a quirky little single called Miranda. (Unless you're also counting Val Kilmer’s self-released demos on MySpace...) The idea of Pattinson breaking that silence is kind of thrilling – and honestly, who wouldn’t be curious to hear what the guy behind The Batman has been strumming in private?

It also comes at a fascinating time in his life. He’s juggling major film projects like Die My Love, and Dune: Part Three, not to mention prepping for The Batman Part II. On top of that, he’s a new Dad with singer-actress Suki Waterhouse, which could add some very personal shades to whatever lyrics he’s writing. (Maybe she's been the person getting him back into the studio?)

What makes this all the more endearing is that Pattinson has always been shy about his musical side. Back in 2008, he said he didn’t want people thinking he was “cashing in” by sneaking songs onto the Twilight soundtrack. But time has a way of shifting things, and maybe now he feels free to just create.

When will it come out?

At this point, it's anyone's guess as to when these songs will be released. But, we're hoping their registration with ASCAP means that the project is nearing release.
