We all have that one comfort film we return to —especially when the temperature drops and our appetite for escapism spikes. For many (the RUSSH team included), The Holiday is that film. And in the era of sequels and reboots we're currently living through, it should come as no surprise that Apple TV+ is developing a limited series based on the beloved 2006 rom-com. What is surprising? Nancy Meyers, the original writer and director, appears to have found out about it via Instagram.
“News to me,” Meyers wrote on her Instagram Story this week, sharing a screenshot of the headline. “Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw.”
We'll admit, we're skeptical that anyone could reimagine this world better than Meyers' inimitable touch for warm, fuzzy romance. But our curiosity is piqued nonetheless. Below, everything you need to know about the television remake of The Holiday.
What is The Holiday series about?
The original film followed Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a successful Hollywood trailer editor, and Iris (Kate Winslet), a heartbroken London journalist, as they swap homes during the Christmas and New Year holidays in a bid to escape their lives. In the process, they both accidentally stumble into new beginnings, and new relationships (with Jude Law and Jack Black, respectively).
The Apple TV+ adaptation is expected to stick to the same premise: two women, one American and one British, switch houses over the holidays and discover unexpected romance and personal growth. While no official plot details have been confirmed, the essence of the story appears to remain intact.
Nancy Meyers is out, so who is involved?
Nancy Meyers, notably, is not involved in the project. And the original cast is similarly not on board. This time around, it won’t be Cameron, Kate, Jude, or Jack. The series will introduce an entirely new cast with “new characters,” according to Deadline. Though fans (us) might be manifesting a cameo or two, nothing has been announced.
Behind the camera, Krissie Ducker is attached as writer and executive producer. Comedian and writer Rob Delaney is also on board as a script consultant.
When will it air?
Production has not yet begun, and Apple TV+ has not released an official premiere date. With development still in early stages, the series is likely at least a year away.
