Looks like the scares aren’t stopping anytime soon. HBO Max is officially moving forward with its long-teased The Conjuring series, and there’s a brand-new creative team steering the ship.
Nancy Won, best known for her work on Tiny Beautiful Things, has signed on as show runner and executive producer. If you’re a fan of character-driven storytelling with a sharp emotional edge, this is good news – Won has a knack for grounding even the most supernatural of tales in very human stakes.
She’ll be joined by Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires, two writers with Marvel credits (WandaVision and Agatha All Along). So yes, expect plenty of stylish world-building and maybe even a touch of that Marvel wit amid the chills.
The project has been in development since 2023, with Warner Bros. Television and New Line Cinema backing it as a continuation of the stories set up in the hit film franchise. Peter Safran is executive producing, while James Wand (who directed the first two Conjuring films and helped build the entire horror universe) remains involved through his company Atomic Monster. IMO, that’s about as close to horror royalty as you can get.
And if you’re wondering about the franchise’s staying power, the numbers speak for themselves. The ninth entry in the series, The Conjuring: Last Rites, hit theatres just last week and has already shattered records with the biggest worldwide opening ever for a horror movie. Clearly, audiences are still lining up to watch the Warrens battle those evil spirits.
What’s especially exciting here is that a series format could let the storytelling breathe in ways the films can’t. Instead of one big case per movie, we could get a deeper dive into the Warrens’ files – smaller hauntings, strange artefacts, maybe even some fresh mythology. And with Won and her team at the helm, there’s potential for a show that balances the eerie atmosphere fans expect with richer character development.
When will it be released?
No premiere date has been set yet, but with this creative lineup and the franchise’s momentum, expect HBO Max to put this series front and centre.
