You can now slide into DMs on Spotify too

Just in case there weren't enough para-social platforms where you could connect with your friends or slide into your crushes DMs, Spotify has announced it's rolling out 'Messages' across the music platform – a new way to share your impeccable music taste.

The new feature is already going live, so here's how it works...

When is the feature being rolled out?

According to the Spotify Newsroom, beginning this week, the 'Messages' feature will start rolling out to Free and Premium users aged 16 years and older in select markets on mobile devices.

How do I use it?

To start use the 'Messages' feature:

  1. When listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the Now Playing View, tap the share icon.
  2. Select a friend, or group of friends, and hit send.
  3. Once you accept a message request, you’ll be able to react with emojis, send texts, and seamlessly share Spotify content back and forth.
  4. Access Messages by going to your profile photo in the top left corner.

You can find more information and a tutorial video on the Spotify Newsroom.

Why has it been added?

The new tool feels like a natural upgrade from Spotify’s old sharing methods, which often meant copying links or relying on third-party apps. Now, if you discover a track you love, you can instantly send it to a friend right in Spotify.

It's all part of Spotify’s bigger strategy to become a social hub for music. For years, people have treated music as a shared experience, whether that’s trading mixtapes, burning CDs, or posting playlists online. Spotify’s new messaging system brings that same spirit into the app itself. By letting people chat, react, and discover together, the company hopes to keep users more engaged and, ultimately, more loyal to the platform.

Who can I DM?

You can share Spotify content and start a message in-app with people you’ve interacted with before through Spotify.

Even better, the feature supports group chats, so music lovers can swap recommendations, react in real time, and spark conversations around their favourite sounds.

Another notable detail: messages aren’t limited to quick one-off shares. The addition of reactions and group threads means users can build ongoing conversations around music, almost like a mini community inside Spotify.
