For those who came of age in the late 90s and early 2000s, the mere mention of styling a skirt over trousers might be enough to send shivers down your spine. But like so many sartorial relics of decades gone past, it was only a matter of time before this layered look reappeared in our wardrobes once again. But fear not. Thanks to the influence of designers like The Row, and the stylish attendees of Copenhagen Fashion Week, the look is now infinitely more chic than it ever was.
Skirts-over-pants first cropped up in The Row's Spring 2025 look book, where the Olsen twins once again managed to transform a series of ultra simple pieces into a look that felt not only covetable, but also new. The ensemble in question featured deep blue jeans, worn underneath an ivory dress with a lace-trimmed hem, and topped off with a grey sweater and two-toned flip flops.
Unsurprisingly, it wasn't long before everyone was trying their hand at the look. Nowhere was the brand's influence more evident than Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring Summer 2026, where Danes emulated the vibe en masse. Some opted for long-line silk camisoles worn over denim, while others were more subtly referential, tying silk scarves and pareos at an angle over trousers. While skirt and dress lengths varied, most were unified by the presence of lace, whether simply adorning the hemline, or all-over and sheer for something a little more summery and sultry.
This revival speaks less to Y2K kitsch and more to a broader, bohemian mood — a resistance, as well, to the minimalism and quiet luxury-coded styles that have dominated our wardrobes for the last few years. There's a sense of effort in the look: of outfits worn intentionally, styled piece by piece. It's also something of an evolution of fashion's recent obsession with lingerie-adjacent pieces. Once again, lace, slips, and sheer separates are no longer relegated to the bedroom, but brought to the forefront in everyday dressing.
The trend is versatile, and crucially for those of us in Australia longing to wear skirts but being held back by the cooler temperatures, trans-seasonal. It lends itself just as easily to slouchy, masculine tailoring as it does to fluid, feminine silhouettes. Style a silky slip over a wide-leg trouser and you’re in The Row territory. Or pair a slightly more structured mini skirt over cigarette pants for something closer to the early 2000s.
Make the look your own, with the lace skirts and slips we're loving in 2025. Happy layering.
