Not all star signs are created equally – and exactly which zodiac you're born under is responsible for some of the weird and wonderful traits that make up our diverse personalities. But did you know that there are variations within each star sign, too?

When it comes to Libra, we'd argue this theory runs true. Ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and love, Libras are often perceived as the most charming and elegant members of the zodiac. But as anyone who knows a Libra — or is one — will know, there can be a lot more to this sign than meets the eye.

While all Libras share the same sun sign, the month you’re born can alter the expression of your zodiac energy. Here are the key difference between September Librans and October Librans.

What are decans, and why do they matter?

It's first important to iron out the idea of decans. Libra season runs from September 23 to October 22 and, like all zodiac signs, Libra is divided into three decans, each spanning roughly 10 days – or 10 degrees of the zodiac wheel

Libras born in the first decan (September 23 – October 2) are ruled solely by Venus. The second decan (October 3 – October 12) is co-ruled by Uranus. And the third decan (October 13 – October 22) falls under the influence of Mercury. Each of these planetary influences brings a slightly different flavour to the Libra personality — here's how.

September Libra

Libras born in September fall under the first decan, which is ruled solely by Venus. This tends to make them appear the most quintessential in terms of Libra personality — think: refined, and aesthetically driven. First decan Libras are also naturally charming, and tend to seek balance in all things. Like the symbol of this sign, September Libras approach relationships and conflict with reason rather than reaction. Their taste is impeccable, and their idealism can border on perfectionism. But under the polished surface is a determination and deep belief in fairness.

October Libra

October Libras span the second and third decans, ruled by Uranus and Mercury respectively.

Second decan Libras (October 3–12) are influenced by Uranus, which many say adds a rebellious, sometimes unpredictable edge to their otherwise harmonious nature. As a result, these Libras might be more likely to challenge the status quo. Similarly, they’re experimental, can be bold, and are often drawn to progressive causes. They're also fiercely independent, and while they value relationships, they refuse to be defined by them, or let them take over their life.

On the other hand, third decan Libras (October 13–22) are ruled by Mercury, which gifts them sharp intellect and communication skills. These Libras are witty and curious, both socially and intellectually speaking.  They also have more of a need for stimulation, and an innate ability to see (and understand) a situation from every angle.
