Step inside Sarah & Sebastian's newest store.

It's the brand's first official location in Melbourne, and the unique space is discreetly set off High Street, Armadale.

A design and interior like no other, it's distinct cavernous appearance is the brainchild of Melbourne-based architects Russell & George in collaboration with Creative Director Sarah Gittoes.

 

 

Gittoes is a wanderer, traveller and avid diver. The store's textured and dark walls are inspired by her experiences diving and exploring underwater caves. Russell & George's unique interpretation of these travel experiences has manifested in cavernous walls amplified by light and darkness. A perfect backdrop for illuminated jewellery cabinets, which serve as the focal point.

 

 

A palette of black, with different textured and varying sheens, the store design creates a moody and immersive experience that allows for the control of light. In this cave-like space, light can be focussed on even the smallest of elements.

The store has three simple mirrored forms, each housing jewellery displays & points of sale. These are enveloped by an installation made from aluminium applied to the walls and ceiling. It's this that has been used to created the undulating, cave-like experience.

 

The floor is sheathed in black Japan stained timber with a satin finish - this adds to the themes of depth and reflection already present in the space.

Of course, the lighting is focussed - it's kept direct on the jewellery pieces. But light is also directed on the hand-blown smoke grey glass pendants when the store is closed. This creates colourful and uplighting effects to amplify the interior's association with the ocean. It's a coral reef created by light.

 

 

Now, Melbourne clients of Sarah & Sebastian will be able to experience the brand in person - and in one of the most unique interiors in the city. The space will host a full collection, although the made-to-order pieces will still ship from the Sydney studio. For those who want immediacy, there will be an edit of best-sellers available to purchase on the spot too.
