The story of artist collective Pussy Riot will be told in a new TV series

Ever since Pussy Riot formed back in 2011, the Russian feminist protest and performance art group has dedicated itself to opposing Putin, and in recent years, advocating against the war in Ukraine. Soon one of the group's founding members, Nadya Tolokonnikova, will publish her first memoir and she's just reached an agreement with STX Entertainment who plan to adapt her story into an original limited series. Find all the details about the upcoming series, below.

What is the TV series about?

According to the project's logline, the forthcoming scripted Pussy Riot TV series will focus on Tolokonnikova, and follow her journey as a young girl from Siberia determined to take on "the world's most powerful dictator". It will also detail the formation of Pussy Riot, along with the collective's public art demonstrations including their Punk Prayer at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012 and the series of arrests that followed.

Speaking about the project in a press release, Tolonnikova said, “I was a broke 20-year-old artist studying philosophy, he was one of the most powerful, wealthy and dangerous men on Earth. In 2011 I went against him, damn the consequences. After years of imprisonment, harassment, attacks, trauma I am ready to share this story," she announced.

"My dream is to see my country peaceful, democratic and diverse, where gay people are not being stoned to death. Is it too much to ask? Does it make me an extremist?”

“Today I’m on Russia’s most wanted list, labeled as a foreign agent, and recently was arrested in absentia by Russian court," Tolonnikova continued. "My relatives and friends had been poisoned, my government wants me dead, but I don’t regret anything. If Pussy Riot’s story can inspire a new generation of rebels, it was all not in vain.”

Who else is involved?

With the full support of Pussy Riot behind her, Sophie Watts has signed on as executive producer and will lead the project alongside Robert Simonds and Sam Brown. It's not clear at what stage of production the show is at, nor who has been cast in the series.
