Pania talks touring with Kehlani and the Rihanna song she wishes she’d written

pania

Believe it or not, the thing that compelled Pania to become a musician was Justin Bieber's Never Say Never documentary. Bieber was Pania's favourite musician as a child, now it's Sade, which makes sense when you the West Melbourne singer's bracing tone. Following the release of her latest EP, We Still Young, RUSSH spoke to Pania to discuss the music she holds close. Here is the best song to fall in love to and an album everyone should listen to once, according to Pania.

My first memory of music is…

MTV music videos. They used to be playing in my house all the time and the early 2000s is where I draw a lot of my visual inspiration from; artists like Aaliyah, Lil Kim, the Bad Boys movies.

An album everyone should listen to once is…

Ctrl by SZA. It’s an album I can listen to over and over and never get sick of.

As a child my favourite musician was…

Justin Bieber. I was the biggest fan ever. Watching his documentary inspired me to pursue my music dreams.

Now it’s…

Sade. I discovered her fairly recently but there’s something so vulnerable about her songwriting and her vocal tone speaks to me.

The first concert I ever went to was…

Justin Bieber.

And the last…

Kehlani. I was lucky enough to open for them on their Australian tour and it was a crazy experience. Their fans were so welcoming to me.

The best song to fall in love to is…

No Ordinary Love by Sade.

A song I wish I’d written…

Sex With Me by Rihanna. It’s a catchy pop song but still has an edge to it. I love that Rihanna is so comfortable in her skin.

My favourite lyrics of all time…

Every song from Ctrl by SZA. The album is so raw and honest.

I am currently listening to…

myb by M Huncho. I’ve been to the UK twice this year and I love the music and culture.

My most replayed album is…

Ctrl by SZA.

A song that always makes me cry…

An artist my parents introduced me to is…

Bob Marley. He was always playing at family gatherings and every time I listen to him it brings back good memories.

My hype song is…

HYFR (Hell Ya Fucking Right) by Drake.

Home sounds like…

Silence. It’s my peace.

The song I’m most proud of is…

ALL MINE. I wrote this in Melbourne with my producer Hamley and filmed the video clip in London and Paris. We added a flute to the song and the lyrics are pretty emotional. It’s a song I’m really proud of.
