A Labubu film is on its way

A Labubu film is on its way

Sony Pictures is officially betting big on the world’s favourite bunny-eared agent of chaos, Labubu.

Yes, the impish rabbit-creature from Kasing Lung’s The Monsters collectible series – once the domain of toy obsessives camping outside POP MART stores at dawn – will soon ascend from blind-box stardom to the Hollywood big leagues. Sony has acquired the screen rights and is now developing a live-action feature film, because in 2025, no piece of IP – no matter how tiny, mischievous, or vinyl – shall be left un-cinematic.

What will the film be about?

Plot details are currently under wraps, but the film is expected to explore the fantastical universe of The Monsters – a world that, until now, has mostly existed in collectors’ imaginations and in social-media unboxing videos. Whether Sony plans to lean into the lore’s sweetness or its anarchic undertones remains to be seen, though one can safely assume there will be ample CGI and at least one moment engineered to sell a new limited-edition toy. God forbid we get Sonic or Stitch-level animation monstrosity and the nightmare's that will ensue.

From an industry perspective, the move is hardly surprising. Hollywood has made a habit of raiding the global toy aisle in search of its next billion-dollar franchise – Barbie walked so Labubu could… hop? Scamper? Whatever the verb, Sony clearly hopes this rabbit-adjacent creature can lure audiences seeking something both nostalgic and novel.

When will it be released?

While there’s no release date yet, we think there'll be a little bit of a wait for this one to hit cinemas. Our guess – a late 2026 or early 2027 release.

What's the deal with Labubus?

Labubu, who debuted in 2015 and skyrocketed to global fame thanks to the booming blind-box market, is apparently irresistible box-office material. The character’s mix of childlike wonder, fantasy whimsy, and just a hint of "might bite your ankle" energy has helped it earn a cult following. Now, Sony hopes that same charm will translate to a broader audience – one that may or may not already have a shelf full of Sony Angels and Monchichis staring at them while they sleep.
