Jamie Spears has finally stepped down as Britney Spears’ conservator – but what happens next?

Jamie Spears conservator

This morning, we woke to the news that Jamie Spears had finally and officially stepped down as Britney Spears' conservator. After 13 long and unjust years with her father at the helm of her conservatorship, the artist is finally seeing the justice she deserves – in what is being considered a significant landmark victory for the #FreeBritney movement.

Variety reported that on Thursday, August 12, Ms Spears' father filed a response to her most recent petition asking for him to be removed from the conservatorship. In that document, he announced that he would be stepping down as conservator, with his attorney was quick to point out that there were “no actual grounds for suspending or removing” Mr Spears from his position.

“There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate under Probate Code section 2650. And it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests,” the court documents stated.

Since Mr Spears was instated as his daughter's conservator back in 2008; he has maintained control over his daughter's finances, musical career and major life decisions.

Although the pair had been involved in a long-running legal battle over the star's conservatorship for quite some time; the details and underpinnings of the situation began to garner public attention and discussion back in April 2019. Since then, fans, lawyers and even fellow celebrities have championed Ms Spears' cause relentlessly and now finally, change is imminent.

“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. It is vindication for Britney.  We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” said Ms Spears' attorney Mathew Rosengart.

We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.”

Why has Jamie Spears chosen to make this move now?

After such a vicious and relentless fight, many people are questioning why Mr Spears has suddenly changed his tune. As outlined in the court documents, his reasoning for stepping down as conservator is to avoid an ongoing public battle with his daughter – something he has stated "would not be in her best interest".

"...even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.”

So, he's gone. But what happens next?

Yes, Jamie Spears stepping down as Britney's conservator is certainly a major step forward; but this does not mean that her conservatorship will end all together.

In the most recent court documents, it was stated that Mr Spears "intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator." There's no confirmation yet on who will resume this role; however, there has been speculation in the past that her long-term "care manager" Jodi Montgomery would take over.
