Indonesian artist Isyana Sarasvati on the music that’s shaped her

Isyana Sarasvati

If you don't yet know Isyana Sarasvati, you will soon enough. The Indonesian singer, composer and founder of music label, Redrose Records is coming to Sydney for SXSW. Skilled at piano, flute, violin and saxophone, Sarasvati first made a name for herself by uploading covers to YouTube. Since then, the artist has been recognised by Forbes Asia as one of its 30 under 30 young achievers.

Ahead of her visit to Sydney, RUSSH spoke to Isyana Sarasvati about the music that's influenced her so far. From her favourite childhood band to the song she wishes she'd written.

An album everyone should listen to once is…

ISYANA, hehe.

As a child my favourite musician was…

Queen!

Now it’s…

Still Queen, and New Jeans, BTS, Polyphia.

The first concert I ever went to was…

The Classical Concert in Belgium, I don’t remember at what age, but I was really young.

And the last…

That I saw was Fuji Kaze. But the last concert that I went to was when I performed with Jared Leto for 30 Seconds To Mars in Jakarta.

The best song to fall in love to is…

Bohemian Rhapsody.

A song I wish I’d written…

All of Queen’s songs.

My favourite lyrics of all time…

For me it’s the parts of music pieces that resonate more than the lyrics so I’d say it's Barber's Adagio for Strings.

I am currently listening to…

Playing God by Polyphia.

My most replayed album is…

New Jeans’s latest EP, Get Up.

A song that always makes me cry…

Barber's Adagio for Strings.

An artist my parents introduced me to…

The Beatles, Paul Simon, Queen, and Manhattan Transfer.

My hype song is…

Weird Part of The Night by Louis Cole.

Home sounds like…

My husband and Mako.

The song I’m most proud of is…

Unlock The Key.
