Gone Girl: Jorja McDaniel takes the Gucci Bamboo bag for a spin

Redefining its archives has become a Gucci hallmark, taking iconic pieces and reinventing them a decidedly contemporary twist through vibrant colouring and functionality. The latest reference to House history is the Gucci Bamboo bag, immortalised in the Lust issue on the arm of model Jorja McDaniel, styled by Charlotte Agnew and lensed by Ellen Virgona.

The origins of the Bamboo bag are steeped in House history, dating back to post-war Italy. In 1947, when traditional materials weren’t in ready supply, founder Guccio Gucci and the artisans of its Florentine atelier began to use lightweight, durable bamboo for the handle of the latest bag by the House. They became an instantly recognisable symbol of Gucci, to become a staple of Hollywood’s Golden Age actors and amongst the Jet Set.

Gucci’s Bamboo bag became an innovative icon sought globally, lusted by many and coveted as a prized possession for those within its reach. Bamboo itself has become an emblem of the brand, expanding as a piece of jewellery and sunglass arms as a reoccurring motif.

Creative Director Alessandro Michele declared Gucci “an infant that is constantly reborn and recreated... has gone through multiple lives and continues to be so popular." Thus, the bamboo is reborn – long may she live.

Discover the Gucci Bamboo 1947 yourself and carry with you a piece of House history.
