On Friday 5 December we greet our next Full Moon – which will be our last Supermoon of the year. Officially, it reaches its apex at exactly 10:14 am AEDT; meaning it will appear to be full on the prior Thursday evening as well as the Friday night. If you're wanting the best view, keep your eyes on the horizon on Friday. Owing to its proximity to the summer solstice, it will be the biggest Supermoon of 2025.
The traditional name for this Full Moon is the Cold Moon or Long Night Moon, a name derived from Native American, colonial American and European roots. This Moon is the one that signals the true commencement of the Northern hemisphere winter; just as the Southern hemisphere heads towards the height of its summer. So, the name may sound odd to those basking in the Southern sun.
Arriving in the Air sign of Gemini and activating your social and communication sectors, this will be just the thing you need to shake you out of that post-Mercury-Retrograde funk? Here's what you need to know.
Best time to see the December 2025 Supermoon
The residents of the Southern Hemisphere are in luck, they will have the best view of this spectacle. The reason? During the summer months (which the South is currently experiencing), the Moon sits lower in the sky. Thanks to a nifty optical illusion, the closer the Moon is to the horizon, the bigger it appears to be. It means that the Full Moon or Supermoon that falls closest to the summer solstice that year will appear to be the biggest. For the South that means our December Supermoon. But for the North, it would be the Full Moon in June.
If you're a resident of the Northern Hemisphere, don't worry, you will still have a good view of the December Moon. Supermoons on average are about 30 per cent brighter and 14 per cent bigger than regular Full Moons; while your winter Moon will be sitting higher in the sky, it will still look big and bright.
The best time to see December's Supermoon will be around sunset when the Moon is closest to the horizon. Below is when to expect sunset in your city on Friday 5 December, keep your eyes on the horizon at this time.

What to expect from our Super Full Moon in Gemini
This Supermoon rises in adaptable Gemini. It means in this moment we’re met with the unmistakable charge of this mutable Air sign—restless, curious, and effortlessly conversational. Gemini is in a way a cosmic juggler. A master of duality, communication and versatility – Gemini could strike up a conversation with a house plant. This high-energy, socially-attuned frequency is what we need as we enter the final weeks of the year, where calendars fill, conversations multiply, and life shifts into fast-forward.
As the haze of Mercury Retrograde lifts, we can feel a subtle but meaningful exhale – like static finally clearing from the mental airwaves. Gemini, ruler of communication, ideas, and day-to-day movement, clicks back into alignment, allowing clarity to return after a long period of information overload and emotional excavation.
Coming out of Scorpio season’s deep, emotional underworld was a learning experience; and we were able to take this new knowledge into the Sagittarius portion of the year. This Full Moon marks a moment of synthesis—not just understanding what has surfaced, but deciding how to use it. Planning appointments, writing lists, reshuffling schedules, refining daily rituals—tasks that once felt tedious suddenly become empowering. What we give structure to in this moment will give back to us in abundance later.
But a Full Moon is still a Full Moon: an energetic apex where emotions heighten and moods oscillate. Gemini softens the blow by infusing the moment with buoyancy. Instead of overwhelm, we feel enlivened. Our emotional selves are lit up by Gemini's adaptability, while Sagittarius in Mars and Venus has us feeling optimistic and flirty. Social engagements that would normally have felt like a draining chore can become a way to fill your cup. Trying to balance a work Christmas party, a friend's birthday dinner and a gig all in one week? No problem. Gemini has you thriving, not merely surviving.
Still, beneath the buzz lies something more reflective. A Gemini Full Moon asks us to learn—to question, to consider, to imagine what comes next. You may be confronted with decisions you’ve been avoiding, especially around what needs to be released before the new year. Gemini encourages you to weigh both your head and your heart, recognising that clarity comes not from choosing one over the other, but from allowing both to guide you.
As this final Full Moon of the year illuminates the sky, let it illuminate your path forward: what you’re ready to leave behind, what you’re integrating, and what you’re now prepared to build. This will be key to your success in the new year, so take it seriously. If you're someone that follows Lunar horoscopes, you'll know that we're leaving the Year of the Snake, a time that is all about shedding the past and letting go. Now, more than ever you will need to take stock of what does not serve you and make a conscious decision to leave it behind as you take your first steps towards 2026.
