A tour through the 70s wardrobes of ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’

daisy jones & the six outfits

There was a lot riding on the outfits of Daisy Jones & the SixNo one felt this more than the series costume designer Denise Wingate. For one, Daisy Jones & the Six began as a book. Authored by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the source material landed on The New York Times best sellers list upon its release in 2019 and attracted hordes of readers for its fictional oral history of a 70s band. Which leads us to the other pressure point; the book was inspired by Fleetwood Mac, a band everyone has a stake in – especially when it comes to its frontwoman Stevie Nicks.

So how to capture the witchy, bohemian noir style of Nicks? First up you need to find the perfect muse. And show creators certainly nailed that with their casting of Riley Keough. Over the series her wardrobe evolves from peasant blouses and denim cut offs to shimmery kimonos and oversized 70s fur-trimmed coats.

While Keough's wardrobe encapsulates one side of the decade, Wingate used female leads like Camila Dunne, Karen Sirko and Simone Jackson to speak to the other styles present during that time. Camila's wardrobe transforms from naive floral maxi dresses and denim bell pants, to demure 70s pregnancy style into what Wingate has likened to the wardrobe of Bianca Jagger. Simone Jackson's style was heavily influenced by the earthy, and later, disco-infused style of Chaka Khan and Donna Summer. Meanwhile, Sirko's style plays on the beatnik and punk-oriented wardrobe of east coast icons like Patti Smith and Debbie Harry; think turtlenecks, lashings of black and leather.

Speaking to Harper's Bazaar about her approach to designing the wardrobes for Daisy Jones & the Six, Wingate said: "I wanted to make it look really authentic, like a documentary, because it reads like a documentary. I didn’t want it to look, like, costumeywith people dressing up for the ’70s."
