Welcome to sad girl season: Crying makeup is trending on TikTok

tiktok crying makeup

Maybe it was Cassie's endless sobbing in season 2 of Euphoria that did it; tear tracks elevated by the inimitable Donni Davy. Perhaps it was the handful of sodden selfies Bella Hadid uploaded in November 2021 in an open and rare celebrity display of vulnerability. After all, every outfit, hair choice and style decision the model makes inevitably goes viral. Whatever it is, crying is trending in the beauty world and as a Cancerian I feel affirmed.

Where are we witnessing this shift towards melancholia? Do you even have to ask? On TikTok makeup artists and beauty bloggers are dusting blush across their nose and lining their eyes with glistening gels and highlighters to simulate the after-effect of crying.

It began last week when makeup artist Zoe Kim Kenealy uploaded a "crying makeup" tutorial for the "unstable girlies". In the video Kenealy guides us through a beauty look where the lips have a soft, bitten look, and the cheeks, under eye area, and nose are flushed and made rosy with cream blush. Meanwhile, Kenealy adds Vinyl Effect by About Face to the eyes and cupids bow for a glassy, weepy result. The makeup artist also insists that lashes must be curled to complete the look.

While Kenealy stating "you know how we look good when we cry" is debatable – personally my eyes are too puffy to even check my reflection in the mirror and a few users have mirrored this sentiment with the comment "who is we" – we have no doubt that this look will catch on.

Some commenters have pointed out that the tutorial is essentially Japanese Igari makeup, a blush-forward trend made popular back in 2018 by the famous Japanese makeup artist Igari Shinobu, hence the name.

Either way, this one is for the soft girlies. If the whole makeup process is too much, we suggest simply flicking on Everything I Know About Love and let nature do its thing. After all, if we're going to waste those 2L of water we chug down daily, we may as well make the most out of it.
