Cole Escola is on a roll. Fresh off their Tony-winning performance in the Broadway smash Oh, Mary! – which also landed as a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama – Escola is now making the leap to the big screen. Their next move? Jonty, a new comedy from A24.
What is the film about?
Plot details are still under wraps, but with this team, audiences can expect a smart, biting comedy with plenty of heart.
Who is involved in the film?
They’ll be starring opposite Jesse Plemons, who’s been on an impressive run himself.
From his Oscar-nominated role in The Power of the Dog to Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness and Netflix’s Zero Day, Plemons keeps proving his range. He’s also got major projects on deck, including a film with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise, plus a return to The Hunger Games universe as Plutarch Heavensbee.
But the movie comes with serious pedigree behind the camera, too. Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers) is directing, while the script is penned by Jesse Armstrong (the Emmy-winning creator of Succession) and his longtime collaborator Sam Bain (Peep Show, Four Lions).
And let’s not forget the powerhouse team producing the film: A24, Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner, and Broadway Video’s Lorne Michaels and Erin David. With names like these attached, it’s no surprise Jonty is already generating serious buzz as one of the most anticipated comedies on the horizon.
Who is Cole Escola?
In case you didn't already read our article on the topic, Escola’s casting highlights just how far they’ve come as a performer. Known for their scene-stealing turns on Difficult People, Search Party, and At Home with Amy Sedaris – where they won a Writers Guild Award – Escola has built a reputation for blending eccentric comedy with surprising emotional depth.
Moving into a lead role in a prestige film feels like the natural next step.
