A rare Blood Moon is coming and Australia will have the best view

Welcome to eclipse season. The period begins dramatically, with a Blood Moon on evening of 7 September – technically in the early hours of 8 September.

You'll have to be either a night owl or an early riser to see it. Expect the full blood-red glow to happen around 4am AEST for about 40 minutes.

Arriving in Water sign Pisces, this moment of intensity will be both transformative and also deeply emotional. Here is everything you need to know about September's Lunar Eclipse and Blood Moon, including when and how to see it.

What time can you see the Blood Moon? And which city has the best view?

Adelaide, Perth and Darwin will have the best view. These locales will be treated to a clear view of the eclipse from beginning to end. Those in Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart will also get a clear view, although those locations will miss the penumbral phase – which is when the Moon moves in the the outer edge of the shadow.

If you need the specifics, here's when to expect each stage of the Blood Moon:

  • Penumbral Eclipse begins - 8 Sep at 1:28:25 am AEST
  • Partial Eclipse begins - 8 Sep at 2:27:09 am AEST
  • Full Eclipse begins - 8 Sep at 3:30:48 am AEST
  • Maximum Eclipse, when the Moon will turn red - 8 Sep at 4:11:47 am AEST
  • Full Eclipse ends - 8 Sep at 4:52:51 am AEST
  • Partial Eclipse ends - 8 Sep at 5:56:31 am AEST
  • Penumbral Eclipse ends - 8 Sep at 6:55:08 am AEST

While the times are not the most ideal or convenient, this is one of the few full Blood Moons visible from Australia in many years. If you have the energy to stay up, it will be worth it.

What is a Blood Moon? Is that the same as a Lunar Eclipse?

Yes, a Blood Moon is just another name for a total Lunar Eclipse. These occurrences are rare as they can only happen during a Full Moon when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. During a Lunar Eclipse, the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth, blocking it from receiving any sunlight. This dulls the glow of the Moon and turns it a ruddy, rust red colour that people liken to the colour of blood.

Not all Lunar Eclipses will be true Blood Moons though. For a Blood Moon to happen, the Moon must pass entirely through the Earth's shadow. In instances of a partial Lunar Eclipse, where only part of the Moon drifts into the shadows, the Moon won't take on the full red colour. Although there was a Lunar Eclipse in March, this is the only full Blood Moon visible to all of Australia for 2025.

What does this Blood Moon mean astrologically? Especially since it falls in Pisces?

Full Moons mark the pinnacle of the lunar cycle. They're a moment of heightened energy and sometimes even tension. Moodiness, intensity and euphoria are all common during Full Moons. And these experiences are only amplified during a Blood Moon. Expect higher highs, and deeper more intense lows. This will be a period of revelation and clarity, when hidden truths may surface and new, inspiring light-bulb moments can strike at the strangest times.

If you have been actively manifesting for you future, this could be the moment where intentions set during the New Moon or the Lions's Gate Portal come to fruition.

Owing to their position in the sky, Full Moons are always in the opposite sign to the Sun. Since the Sun is currently in Virgo, this means the Moon will be in Pisces. With this Full Blood Moon falling in this deeply emotional Water sign, the mood around this time may feel particularly raw. Pisces is arguably the most sensitive sign of the zodiac, in that it has a high level of intuition and perceptiveness. In fact, Pisces is considered the clairvoyant of the zodiac. With that extra sense does come a burden. It means, that at this time, we'll all be more tender, and easily-wounded, but in a more subtle, permeable sense. It will be easy to absorb the moods and energy of our surroundings like a sponge.

This experience has its Yin and Yang moments. When the atmosphere is light and joyful, we feel uplifted and inspired. But in heavier or more somber environments, you'll feel weighed down. It can trigger deep emotional reflection—even existential questioning.Under this Blood, you may feel your inner world become more exposed and tender than usual. Emotional boundaries may blur, making it easy to internalise the pain or stress of those around you. This will be especially true if you already have a strong Water presence in your natal chart. Be particularly mindful if your natal Moon is in Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio.

Whether it's a friend venting about work, a partner grappling with family drama, or a colleague unloading romantic woes, you'll likely find it difficult to simply listen without also feeling. This energy can become overwhelming, potentially destabilising your to your mental and emotional balance. Thankfully, the Sun in Virgo offer a grounding. This Earth sign—gives us some much-needed stability. Virgo's analytical and practical nature helps tether us to reality, offering a safe harbour amidst the emotional waves.

Yet despite the emotional intensity, a Pisces Moon is also a wellspring of creativity. This is a sign that doesn't just think outside the box—it dreams outside the box. Pisces encourages imaginative expression in all forms: writing, painting, singing, dancing, dreaming. If you’ve been feeling blocked or creatively stuck, this Moon may be exactly what you need to break through. Let yourself flow. Express freely. Allow your soul to speak in the language it knows best.
