Beach goth vibes and an endless reading list: Andréa Tchacos’s summer essentials

It's all about of self-gifting, a long reading list and albums to play with your hair in the breeze. Deputy Editor Andréa Tchacos’s guide to enjoying an obligation-free summer – finally.

This year I’ll be gifting …

All the things I want (works by Alana Wilson and Alex Tracey, shown at RUSSH’s 15-year anniversary exhibition and still available via the RUSSH store). And some I can’t have (the Sophie Buhai hair accessories that just aren’t the same on my stub of a ponytail). For the ones I hold closest – with their consent – a course in Vedic meditation from the local, Bondi Meditation Centre. And a subscription for my grandma, just like every other year.

I’d love to receive …

At this point it’s all about the self-gift, isn’t it? So back to IDEA for these gems, to The RealReal to revisit most loved items  (‘Manolo Blahnik’, ‘thong sandals’ and ‘Yves Saint Laurent vintage’ are the search terms that keep giving). And to Matteau for the beach goth aesthetic I’ve been feeling since Buzz White and Anna Foster captured Clarence Haster in all-black for our Place To Be issue. I’m also seeking ‘close enough’ alternatives to the 90s Hermès sandals I’ve been coveting forever. Oh, and a big bag of coffee to welcome the new working year, from my very favourites at Yilgarn.

My summer break looks like …

Aquatic bliss. This year it’s a bicoastal beach trip between Margaret River (Gracetown and Injidup) and the rocks to the left of Bronte pool. There’s really nothing else one needs but if you must know I’ll be wearing Glossier SPF and my favourite Paradising tee.

My holiday reading list includes …

Guaranteed, I will underestimate social obligations and buy too many books on my pre-holiday visit to Kinokuniya. But that doesn’t matter because obviously there is no such thing as too many books. Gratitude by Oliver Sacks has been on my reading list since Kym Ellery recommended it in an interview some time ago. Then there’s Patti Smith’s new one; A Little Life, finally; Henry Miller’s letters to Anaïs and why not Tropic of Capricorn while I’m in that mood.

My summer playlist sounds like …

The Australian summer is everything to me, yet I still can’t stop thinking about Hydra – so, Leonard Cohen to ease the transition. Plus, prepping for Solange in January, relishing John Carroll Kirby’s new long-play, out on Patience, and the summer regulars. Washed Out for the sole purpose of road tripping, winding down the windows and making waves with our hands in the breeze.
