Abby Bella May on staying active and why being kind is the best beauty advice she’s ever received

Abby Bella May has a simple approach to beauty. In fact, to her beauty is more about being kind and loving the skin you're in, rather than a product or cream. As such, her back-to-basics routine focuses on sleep, vitamins and staying active.

We chatted with the artist ahead of the release of her EP I Am Sensitive - out April 30 on all major streaming - to get a look into her life and what her days look like. Below, she shares all things beauty and wellness and explains why she doesn't have a beauty icon.

What does your beauty routine look like?

I will have a shower, wash my face then I'll moisturise and drink a cup of tea or coffee in the morning. I usually have a shower before bed. I'll rinse my hair, cleanse my face and then moisturise after the shower.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

Well, I mostly make music, but to make money whilst I'm trying to make it as a singer/songwriter, I work part-time. A typical day for me looks like this: I will go to the gym or do pilates in my living room, go to work, come home and practice the guitar, see if any melodies and write down any ideas I have. I also go to uni, I study Entertainment Management, so I'll study a little bit and then I'll watch Vampire Diaries for the seventh time.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

At the moment I'm using QV foam cleanser and I love it, I also use Sukin face exfoliator and love that as well.

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

Exercise is a large part of my routine yeah, I love going to the gym and doing HITT classes. I also love doing at home Pilates and love running as well. I eat pretty healthily most of the time, but in my books it's important to eat what you want when you want - just making sure it's not all the time. I love a good burger and I think letting yourself eat what you want in moderation instead of restricting yourself is the key to keeping fit and healthy.

What procedures or professional treatments do you have as part of your beauty routine?

I actually don’t get anything done. I've had eyebrow lamination before and I absolutely loved it, if I could do this on the regular I would.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

My main form of beauty body maintenance would be showering or having a nice bath with heaps of bubbles. I use QV moisturiser for my body as it does the job nicely.

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

It depends, am I recovering from a hangover? Hahah. If I am recovering from a hangover it's just sleep, burgers more sleep and drink water. If it's just from being too tired, I will rest as much as I can. Sleep is the best remedy, I'll drink lots of water and I'll listen to meditation music usually to help me relax.

You’re tired or rundown: what is your beauty hack?

I take this powdered potent vitamin C supplement that helps fight any colds that might try to get me when I'm run down. Also making a dinner with lotsssss of veggies and protein like a stir fry or a soup is another hack. AND sleep.

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

I honestly don’t have one in particular. Lately, I have been following body-positive Instagram accounts that are mostly women and I'd have to say all women who are comfortable in their skin and who project body positivity are my icons, because that shit is real and that’s what I like to see.

What is the best advice on beauty you’ve received?

Probably to be who you are, inside and out, be kind to others, treat everyone equally, be yourself in every situation. I think beauty resonates from the inside, out and I think when it comes to beauty that’s definitely one of the most important things in a person.

What is the best advice on health you’ve received?

Stay active. To me, it's so important to move my body in some way each day, even if it’s a light walk. It's soo good for mental clarity and good for your body as well.

What is the one product you can’t live without?

It's between bronzer and mascara… I would say mascara, because I feel naked without it.
