Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow, original It girl, has a biography en route. While the actress-turned-wellness-mogul isn't actually penning the work herself, the material is in good hands, with Amy Odell (author of cult fashion Substack, Back Row) charged with the task. It's based on over 220 interviews with close friends and colleagues of Paltrow (though not actually endorsed by the star herself), with Odell telling People, "Love her or hate her, we haven't been able to look away."
Although it's not yet hit shelves, there's already rumours about exactly what kind of juicy material we can expect on the inside and, naturally, we couldn't help but join the conversation. Below, five things we want to read about in Gwyneth: The Biography.
1. Her many high-profile romances (and break ups)
From Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck to Chris Martin, Gwyneth's romantic past is akin to a Hollywood awards ceremony nomination list. In an excerpt of the biography published by Us Weekly, Odell gives insight into Paltrow's post-breakup coping mechanisms. In particular, when Brad Pitt moved on with Jennifer Anniston, the book reads, “Gwyneth confided to friends that she’d felt sad when she learned they were getting married." It continues, “She was also fond of telling them that Brad ‘has terrible taste in women.’” Years later, when Pitt was embroiled in a cheating scandal with Angelina Jolie, the excerpt alleges: “According to someone familiar with the discussion, Gwyneth allegedly told her [Pitt is] dumber than a sack of shit.’”
Here's hoping there's more where that came from, but perhaps in the realm of her relationships with Affleck and Martin.
2. Her friendship with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy
With Ryan Murphy's American Love Story on the horizon, it's only fitting that we delve into the relationship of these two 90s icons. According to an excerpt published by Us Weekly, the pair were known to each other through Calvin Klein — Bessette worked as a publicist for the brand, while Paltrow was regularly dressed by them. But according to these reports, their relationship wasn't exactly smooth sailing,
“One of the publicists on the brand’s small team who helped Gwyneth was Carolyn Bessette (who would go on to become Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy),” the excerpt reads. “According to one person familiar with her thinking, Gwyneth irked her. When there were pictures of Gwyneth in the papers, Bessette, who viewed her as ‘little miss perfect,’ would make cutting remarks about her.” We're going to need to read a lot more where that came from.
3. That 1999 Oscars win
While Paltrow's late 90s Oscars win for Shakespeare In Love was one of the most memorable moments in her acting career, the biography promises to delve into the controversy that surrounded it. Specifically, an excerpt shared by People magazine breaks down the rumour that Paltrow allegedly “stole” the script for the part from Winona Ryder.
“It was never sent to Winona as an offer, but Winona wanted to do the part and Gwyneth had recommended her for the part,” the excerpt reads. "After a story about Gwyneth allegedly stealing the script from Winona’s coffee table reached the media, Gwyneth told friends that Ryder had started the rumour, and insisted she’d received the script through her agent. Shakespeare in Love opened on December 11 to ravishing reviews.”
4. Her friendship fallout with Madonna
Chances are, you've seen headlines swirling this week about an alleged friendship breakdown between Paltrow and Madonna on a private island. According to Odell, Madonna allegedly showed up uninvited to a holiday Gwyneth and Chris Martin were on — and a blow-up at dinner sent things particularly haywire. “Madonna seemed to know that Gwyneth would be there, which Gwyneth seemed to find strange, a friend remembered,” the excerpt published by People reads.
After reportedly witnessing the Queen of Pop go off on her daughter, Lourdes, “Gwyneth and Martin were disgusted by the behaviour. ‘I can’t be around this woman anymore,’ Martin told Gwyneth. ‘She’s awful.’ Gwyneth agreed that Madonna was toxic and ended the friendship.”
5. The actress-to-Goop pipeline
Paltrow’s transformation to wellness guru is nothing short of fascinating. We're hoping the biography unpacks how she built Goop from an email newsletter to billion-dollar wellness empire, as her (many) critics looked on from the sideline. Of course, there's a number of Goop-related scandals to be unpacked in the process, from jade eggs to scented candles.
