Mugler is past, present, and future for its SS22 film

Mugler SS22

Happy pride month indeed! For Mugler SS22, creative director Casey Cadwallader really said "let's put this in sport mode" for the brands latest collection film in collaboration with NY’s Torso Solutions, who the brand has worked with for the past couple of years to create full blown collection fantasy films, each getting better than the next.

For SS22's energetic film, the brand is expanding their lineup of talent that has left us shaking in our boots, adding Chloe Sevigny, Megan Thee Stallion, and Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta (returning) who have a kiss on the hood of a limo (we said HAPPY PRIDE), to the roster of returning superstars like Bella Hadid, Adut Akech, Eartheater, Loudres Leon, and queen of Mugler, Dominique Jackson.

Clad in the most recognisable house of Mugler codes – catsuits with fabric that snakes up the legs and over the torso, creating the classic Mugler body-illusion effect, corsets with half-cup busts in latex, cropped blazers with cut outs in all of the right places, plexiglass collars suspending spandex and sequins – the cast took their places on a set which paid homage to Hollywood film stars, drawing on Manfred Thierry Mugler's love of performance.

And what a performance it was! Megan Thee Stallion opened the film in a denim two piece with a troupe of Mugler outfitted dancers behind her, before the shot cuts to Sevigny with a metre-long ponytail marching into her shot, which is being filmed by the likes of Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta. The two appear later on in the film again, on the hood of a limousine, where they share a snog hot enough to break the internet, before Hadid and Jackson take the scene.

The energy is erotic, high-octane, high-impact, as it references the past, present and future with a cast of 90s supers and ballroom legends, girls of the moment, and the future faces of fashion, while drawing on key Mugler silhouettes and applying a kind of accessible, americanised modernism to the entire collection. As far as Manfred's legacy is concerned, Cadwallader is doing quite the job at upholding the spectacle.
