Yan Yan Chan on the power of a good bag and self-expression

In partnership with Valentino

Clothing that is said to celebrate self-expression and amplify individuality. This is what Valentino's Fall 2021 Roman Palazzo collection is built upon. And what better way to pay tribute to such a sentiment with Sydney's own self-expressive creative, Yan Yan Chan. On a rainy day in Sydney, Yan joined us at RUSSH to explore the collection, namely the latest iteration of the Valentino Garavani Rockstud Alcove Bag and all of its magic.

Equally, there is magic about Yan. Something in the water, perhaps, that brings her undeniable energy into focus. A stylistic touchpoint and multi-hyphenate creative with much to say, we sit down with Yan to discuss the importance of a good bag and what self-expression realistically looks like to her.

How do you get dressed in the morning?

Deciding on what to wear is often an after-thought and the last thing I do before I walk out of the door. I like practicality so it's always very weather-dependent. The less time I spend thinking about what to put on my body, the better it is (for everyone) haha.

You’re leaving the house. What comes with you?

A spray of something delicious & a bag full of essentials.

What is currently in your bag?

Umbrella, gloves, 1L water bottle, laptop, mints, gum, Vitamin C, pens. I like to be prepared, and I don't like to be cold.

Does this change pending the occasion?

For the night I like to transition to something more compact that carries my phone and lipstick.

What is the strangest thing in your bag?

Toothbrush/paste?

What is the most necessary thing in your bag?

Toothbrush and toothpaste. After every meal.

When getting dressed, is it bag first, outfit second, or outfit first, bag second?

I tend to use the same bag every day. So bag first, and outfit second. If I have my bag with everything I need in it, I could be wearing a bathrobe and I'd still have a good day, at the moment it’s the Valentino Garavani Rockstud Alcove double handle bag.

Valentino's Pre-Fall 21 Roman Palazzo Collection celebrates clothes that are worn as an extension of self-expression.
How do you express yourself?

Clothes definitely make me feel some kind of way, but the last few months I've been working on articulating my feelings and thoughts better, therapy and acting classes help with self-expression in a way I've never been able to before.

Our shoot together felt almost magical in execution. Where do you find moments of magic?

It was very magical and a bit kooky. You can find magic anywhere when you let your inner child play.
