What does your future hold – Dior’s Haute Couture 2021-2022 was inspired by Tarot

Dior Haute Couture 2021 - 2022

Take a walk into the mystic with Dior Haute Couture 2021-2022.

A collection inspired by the magic and beauty of a deck of tarot cards, it was one that reminded us of the pleasure and inspiration that fashion evokes.

The pieces in the collection were not presented in just any old showcase. Our experience with the 2021 Haute Couture collection came through the eyes of Italian director Matteo Garrone. A 14 minute film takes us deep inside the world of Dior and the ancient art of reading the tarot.

Let the High Priestess walk you into an imaginary world, one that is past, present and future. A world of puzzles and witchy whimsy, we see the pieces come to life as they were imagined - deep in a realm of abstract possibility.

Creative director of Dior Maria Grazia Chiuri felt a connection to the world of tarot and the visual language that the card use to communicate. The rich symbolic lexicon and fascinating characters of the tarot acted as a source on inspiration, a way to experiment with couture and explore the concept of destiny.

The Haute Couture collection is a series of extraordinary evening gowns. Featuring abstract contructions, bas-relief openwork bodices and repeated motifs, the pieces communicate the graphic energy felt in when opening a deck of tarot cards. Tweed, cashmere and organza on shirts, skirts, pants and capes all play a part - and interestingly the Bar jacket is reimagined in black velvet.

Christian Dior himself was passionate about the art of divination. As such, the Haute Couture 2021-2022 collection is an ode to soul of the house of Dior and an awakening of possibilities and a prophecy of the future.

Dior's Haute Couture 2021-2022 show follows on from the legacy last year's Haute Couture 2020-2021 - which was one of the first Dior shows to be lived streamed rather than presented to a live audience.

Haute Couture 2020 was inspired by creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri's fascination with Le théatre de la Mode. A touring exhibition during the post World War II years 1945 and 1946, Le théatre de la Mode sought to bring design and beauty back to the creativity-deprived public in Europe and America. The exhibit comprised of miniature fashion mannequins wearing glitz and gowns, a spectacle of whimsy and rejuvenation for creative minds.

Maria Grazia Chiuri took this sentiment and used it to inspire the Haute Couture 2020-2021 collection. The pieces were designed to evoke the beauty and magic of fashion. As such, this presentation was not just any plain runway show. The collection was presented through a 15 minute film directed by Matteo Garrone. We open onto a few of the talented Dior ateliers, expertly crafting and constructing their fashion pieces. But we are quickly whisked away into a mystical alternate reality - a world of chanted forests, wood nymphs and mermaids.

It was a special and unique view inside the world of Dior, one that helped whisk us away at a time when we needed it most.

Stay inspired, follow us.
