Thelma Plum on low-key skincare and why she loves vitamin shots

Australian songbird Thelma Plum knows the importance of a holistic approach to self care. Drinking lots of water, keeping up her vitamin intake and adding probiotics are all part of her beauty routine.

Here, the Gamilaraay songwriter and ARIA-Award-winning artist shares with us her favourite haircare products, why she loves cult product Weleda Skin Food and what life has been like after recovering from COVID-19.

What is your morning beauty routine?

Wake up and wash my face and I just LaRoche-Posey moisturising cleanser or a Skinceuticals cleanser, then I follow that by a Dr. Dennis face peel and then after that some moisturiser or a nice face oil and then I follow that with sunscreen. Then maybe a skin tint, depending on what I have going on that day. That’s my skin routine, but I also love using the Herbal Essences Coconut and Aloe Hair Oil blend - it's a super hydrating mist spray I like using in my hair every day. I just spritz a bit in my hair and go!

What is your night beauty routine?

Love a clean, moisturised face for bed. I will often use my Weleda Skin Food as an overnight face mask. Also investing in a silk pillow was a game changer for me.

Describe what you do for a living? What does a typical day look like for you?

Well, normally playing music and doing shows but at the moment I can’t really do that. So right now, I’m working on my second record and doing a lot of writing. I’ve got a new studio set up which has been keeping me occupied and I make sure every single day I have a lot of playtime with my beautiful cat, Buddy.

What is the supermarket/ drug store/ chemist beauty product(s) that you use and love?

So I’m a big fan of Cetaphil and DermaVeen for face cleansers. I think that they’re really good and affordable and I like that they don’t have any chemicals in them. Obviously Herbal Essences New Potent Aloe range is my go to - funnily enough, even before becoming the ambassador, that was my go to haircare line. Super affordable and contain zero nasties or sulfates.

What is your main form of beauty body maintenance? What products do you use on your body?

I use Brazillian Bum Bum creme, it smells so good! I’m a big fan of coconut oil on the body and lately, I’ve even been using a bit of Herbal Essences Potent Aloe and Eucalyptus Shampoo to wash my arms just because it smells so good!

How do you keep fit/ healthy? Does exercise form a large part of your routine?

I try not to get too caught up on my body... but though I try my best, I still do. I drink a lot of water and make sure I have my vitamins. Since having COVID-19, my smell is very funny, it's eliciting the wrong chemicals to the wrong parts of my brain. At the moment, I can only eat a very selective amount of food so I'm trying to make sure everything I put in my body is really healthy. I also make sure I have my probiotics and I love going for a skate, to the dog park or for a walk along the river!

What do you do when your body needs to recover?

I’m pretty good at answering this since I had COVID-19! Lots of rest, especially when life is normal and I'm on tour, I'm just always exhausted. So I need to make sure that I'm well-rested, have lots of good food going into my body and try to avoid too much alcohol. I’ve also been loving vitamin C and vitamin B injections, I've had them done a couple of times now! Funnily enough, they actually have them in London everywhere, and when I was recording a record I would get them done.

You’re tired or rundown: what is your beauty hack?

Herbal Essences Argan Oil Repairing Mask for my hair - this is deeply moisturising for my thick hair! For my face Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta daily peel, followed by a skin oil/sunscreen and lots of concealer.

What is the one non-negotiable in your beauty routine?

Lip exfoliator!!!

Do you have a beauty icon? Who are they and why?

Rosie Kalina! She is a beautiful Aboriginal makeup artist and I’m always on her page looking for inspo.

What is the one product you can’t live without?
