The humble stripe has long been a symbol of summer. And, with a change in seasons just weeks away, there’s never been a better time to incorporate the nautical pattern into your rotation.

Much like other sartorial markers synonymous with summer – linens, thongs, raffia basket bags – stripes are a mainstay of warmer weather, graduating from fashion’s trend cycle to become a timeless staple in our wardrobes. 

But if you thought the pattern was predictable, think again. While the classic nautical blue-and-white will always have a place in our hearts, there’s plenty of out-of-the-box iterations to get acquainted with in 2024.  From modern imaginings on the classic pinstripe, to evening dresses punctuated by stripes in electric hues, the simple pattern has undergone several upgrades this season. As for how we're styling these new-and-improved stripes, it's all about experimentation. Matching sets will always be one of the easiest ways to look put together, and the striped-varieties are no exception. But there's also room to experiment with clashing colours and prints. For something a little less daring, striped swimwear makes for the perfect compliment to throw-overs in block colours, while beach bags, hats, and sarongs have also all received the striped treatment.
