Renya Xydis’s insider’s advice

She’s the hair stylist behind that Abbey Lee cover and the go-to cutter for models and editors alike. Here, Renya Xydis gives us her beauty tips and career advice.

My breakthrough career moment was …
At the age of 16 … being asked to do a cover a magazine with an up and coming actress named Nicole Kidman. This was my introduction into the editorial world.

The top five most useful products backstage / on set are …
Wella SP Luxe oil – this is the best hair oil on the market, it’s texture is a dream to work with.
Wella Ocean Spritz – a sea salt spray that creates texture in the hair.
Dyson Supersonic blow dryer – cuts drying time in half and leaves the hair super smooth & shiny.
Dry Shampoo for obvious reasons.
YS Park brushes – THE best.

The product(s) most worth the investment are …
Mizutani scissors – game changes for cutting hair, Dyson Supersonic hairdryer – lightweight and powerful. Cloud 9 flat irons  for the sleekest smoothest styles without damaging the hair.

My biggest beauty trick is …
A bold lipstick and a lick of mascara when I am jet lagged or tired and I need an instant pick-me-up, ready to start again. I wear a bold Tom Ford lipstick and Sisley mascara and I am good to go.

My favourite career memory / highlight is …
Many, many years ago in Paris … I had the opportunity to work backstage with Eugene Souleiman. It changed the way I viewed hairdressing, it opened my eyes and imagination to a whole different level. That was over 20 years ago.

My advice to people getting started in the industry is …
Never say no. Don’t be a clock watcher. Stay till the end of the job. Be humble yet strong!
