Noreen Roth on the benefits of hard work and sun care

Managing Director and co-owner of Peter Thomas Roth, Noreen Roth, knows a thing or two about skin care. Here she shares the tips she got from her grandmother and the ways to make it to the top.

My breakthrough career moment was…
Launching Peter Thomas Roth in China. Since our launch there in 2010 we have become the number one exclusive skin care brand in Sephora China – an accomplishment that I am immensely proud of. I visit China quite often, and I am always inspired by the dedication of the women I meet there. They really do everything possible to have great skin.

The top 5 most useful products backstage/ on set are …
Lashes To Die For Mascara. Hands down, the best in the business. It never runs, and makes your lashes look crazy long with a soft and natural feel.
CC Cream, which is an incredible four-in-one product with Camu Camu – an Amazonian superfruit that has 30 times the Vitamin C of an average orange. It comes in three different tints, and acts as a sunscreen, complexion corrector and moisturiser.
Max Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel, which is an absolute must-have when you’re on set with hot lights and need to eliminate shine. It creates a long-lasting, invisible matte finish without caking or the chalky look of powder, and helps absorb excess oil while minimizing the appearance of pore size.
Max Complexion Correction Pads. I never go anywhere without them! These incredibly effective double-sided cleansing pads are soaked with Salicylic and Glycolic Acid, so they’re great for clearing up pimples and helping improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
Cucumber De-Tox Hydra-Gel Eye Patches. If you’ve ever put cucumber slices over your eyes, you’re going to love these. They feel amazing because they’re made with soothing Cucumber Extract, and they’re great for helping instantly diminish the look of puffiness, dark circles and fine lines and wrinkles in the delicate eye area. I keep mine in the fridge so they’re extra cool and refreshing.

The product most worth the investment are …
A good serum. Serums are typically expensive for a reason. Our Un-Wrinkle Face Serum contains several powerful anti-aging peptides and neuropeptides – along with other active ingredients – at high concentrations. The best foundation for any effective skin care regimen is a quality serum.

My biggest beauty trick/tip is …
Walk on the shady side of the street! Do everything possible to avoid sun damage. Rain or shine, I always use SPF protection – but I also supplement that with big hats and clothing that covers my entire body. I save those skimpier dresses for after the sun goes down! For those times when I’m outside during the day and can’t avoid the sun, I always throw a light, gauzy scarf in my bag. I’ll wrap it around my neck to protect my décolleté, an area particularly prone to sun damage.

My favourite career memory/highlight is …
Formulating our Irish Moor Mud Mask. My grandmother was from Ireland, and she often spoke about the benefits of using Irish Moor Mud on her skin.  She died when I was just 13, but she made quite an impression on me. I can’t tell you how gratifying it was to take this ingredient that my grandmother used to talk about and combine it with the latest skin care technology to create a purifying mask that won’t dry your skin out. Every time I use it, I’m reminded of my grandmother's beautiful peaches-and-cream complexion.

My advice to people getting started in the industry is …
Intern, intern, intern. Take whatever industry internships you can find. Offer to work for a small stipend, or for free if necessary. Be open to working in different areas and taking on new challenges. Internships can lead to exciting career opportunities and foster great industry networking. Our Executive Director of Marketing started with us as an intern many years ago. After pursuing other career opportunities and starting a family, she eventually returned to us – and is now an integral member of our team. Our Manager of Product Development came on board shortly after graduating college and completing her internship with us.
