Lola Tung is entering indie territory post-‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’

We might currently know her best as Belly Conklin, but that's all about to change. The Summer I Turned Pretty star Lola Tung is entering darker territory, following the third and final season of the hit Prime Video series. She's been cast in The Young People, a new feature from horror director Osgood Perkins — marking a major shift from sun-soaked coming-of-age drama to psychological thriller. Here's what you need to know.

What’s The Young People about?

Plot details are still under wraps, but the project is being described as a horror-inflected coming-of-age story. Given Perkins’ signature tone, which we became well acquainted with in Longlegs and The Blackcoat’s Daughter, we can expect something eerie once again.

It's not the first darker film Tung has taken on in recent months. She's just wrapped on Forbidden Fruits, which is a horror film that follows a "witchy femme cult", and stars Emma Chamberlain, Lili Reinhardt, Victoria Pedretti, and Alexandra Shipp. It's slated for release in cinemas in 2026. She also made her debut on Broadway with a role in Hadestown last February — a multi-talented artist if we've ever seen one.

Who else is involved?

Joining Tung is British actor Nico Parker, who starred in the first season of The Last of Us as Sarah Miller. The film is being directed and written by Osgood Perkins and produced under his banner Phobos, alongside Neon — the fast-growing indie distributor known for Parasite, Anora and Longlegs — and Lyrical Media. It’s the first project to come from Perkins’ new deal with Neon.

When will The Young People be released?

Production is set to begin this fall in Vancouver, with The Young People expected to premiere in 2026. Neon will handle the theatrical release. Given the production companies recent awards season streak, we have extra high hopes for this one.
