A look at the fashion legacy of Kylie Minogue

kylie minogue style

If you had to sum up Kylie Minogue's fashion legacy in one item, many would hold up a pair of gold lamé hotpants. Bought at a market on North End Road in Kensington for 50p and worn in tandem with a Stella McCartney halter top, the outfit from the pop star's 2000 Spinning Around music video has been scorched into our brains. "I like their very humble beginnings," Minogue once told British Vogue, "and that they went on to be one of the most iconic things I've ever worn."

But those gleaming gold pants, while iconic (they are currently on display at Arts Centre Melbourne), are not the only standout look of Minogue's from over the years. In the same way Madonna has different wardrobes curated for different music eras, Australia's princess of pop, with the help of her longtime stylist William Baker, is known for her own distinct and daring fashion choices.

Before she gyrated over a bartop to her 2000 hit, Minogue had already built strong ties in luxury fashion. John Galliano famously designed the wardrobe for her 1991 Let's Get To It tour, which took the artist across England, Ireland and Scotland in ruffled mini skirts, gold jackets, fishnets and lingerie. In other music videos, like her 1990 song Shocked she wore Azzedine Alaïa; in the 2001 hit Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Minogue paid homage to Grace Jones with a gossamer hooded white jumpsuit that received praise from Jean Paul Gaultier.

Over the years, Kylie's red carpet looks and music video fashion has demonstrated a keen interest in clothes. She's stepped out in everyone from Balenciaga to Alexander McQueen. So in celebration of the Kylie's latest album, Tensionand with the pop princess kicking off her Las Vegas residency, we're bringing you the best looks of Kylie's career so far. Find them below.
