Beauty / IN THE BAG

Inside Carmen Hamilton’s beauty routine

She’s the mind behind Chronicles of Her and the girl whose closet you covet. Here she shares her moments to remember and the products to never forget.

Tell us about where you grew up and where you live now?
I’m originally from the Gold Coast and now I live in Sydney (Bondi) – you can’t take the girl away from the beach.

What is your career and how did you come to work in this field?
Since graduating university I've always worked in digital. First at a fashion tech start-up, and then in the digital arm of a fashion publication. I'd been writing my blog in my spare time and eventually decided to take a leap of faith and focus solely on this. Last year, I relaunched my blog as a platform that profiles inspiring women around the world and their personal style (not just my own).

What is your favourite part of your job?

Nowadays, my work requires me to wear many hats (writing, shooting, strategy and social media are just a few of the things I do each day). I think that’s an exciting factor of having a digital start-up - the possibilities are endless and you never know what challenge you'll be faced with next week!

I also love (ok, sometimes hate) the pace of the digital space. It's an exciting place to be in right now.

What is the most surreal career moment you’ve ever had?
Last Milan fashion week, I attended the Gucci show and teared up (a little)! A$AP Rocky and Florence Welch were sitting in front of me and the show was just so beautiful - it was definitely a ‘pinch me’ moment.

Who do you look up to in the industry? Why?
Natalie Massenet because I love the image in my mind of her starting Net-A-Porter from her apartment. It motivates me to believe that anything is possible. She recognised a gap in the industry and gave up what she thought was her dream career in journalism to pursue an idea (and thank god she did) – I love that story.

My top five beauty products are …
In no particular order ...
RMS Lip2Cheek in Illusive
Napoleon Perdis Total Bae Use It! Lip And Cheek tint
Estée Lauder Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick foundation
Le Labo Santal 33
St. Tropez Instant Tan Face & Body

My day-to-day beauty routine consists of …
In the morning I just rinse my face with cold water and apply a natural oil followed by 50+ sunscreen. Then I apply a bit of concealer where I need it, cheek tint and brow pencil. At night, I rinse my makeup off in the shower with an oil cleanser followed by an exfoliating cleanser. I apply the natural oil again followed by a retinol serum (some nights).

My approach to / the way I see beauty is …
I think make-up is for highlighting or emphasising your features, not changing the way you look. The older I get, the more I'm embracing my features that are unique to me. When I was younger, I wished I was blonde with tanned skin and a ski jump nose (which couldn't be further from reality ha), but now I'm more accepting of what I used to consider my flaws. I think that's part of growing up. Confidence is the most beautiful thing.

What do you find most frustrating about the beauty conversation?
I don't know if this is exactly the 'conversation' but the relentless pursuit of perfection and the pressure people are under as a result of this worries me. Everyone experiences it – from me to my 15-year-old cousin. We should all try to pay each other (genuine) compliments more. You are exactly as you were meant to be and it's perfect.

For a night out or a special occasion I …
Wear EARRINGS. I love earrings at the moment. I also add a little eyeshadow along the lower lash line - it makes your eyes pop!

What does success mean to you?
Knowing what you want or where you want to be, finding your path and sticking to it. I don't think it really matters where you end up. If you've honoured yourself and your dreams, then you're as successful as you'll ever be.

What do you hope for the rest of 2017?
A holiday! And to continue growing CHRONICLESOFHER.COM and our team.
