Sixties swing – inside the beauty looks at Dior SS 2022

Naturally international fashion week puts art, design and trends front stage. But during these weeks where creativity blooms and we explore the meaning of style, we also set the tone for the beauty looks for the coming year. Of course, nostalgia is always a key point of reference for many of the makeup and hair moments we saw on the catwalks, but it was striking double liner at Dior SS 22 that caught our particular attention.

The striking, eye-enhancing looks were created by Peter Philips, creative and image director for Dior Makeup - a look that took us straight back to the swinging sixties. Philips explains: “I highlighted the eyes, elongating them with a double line of black eyeliner that was graphic but light, in a fresh and cheeky spirit with a sixties vibe.”

It was a mood that had us harking back to a factory-girl-esque vision of big eyes and bigger hair. One that certainly had us excited to get back into our own makeup palettes and experiment with shape and colour. In search of more beauty inspiration, we spoke to Philips on the products he used to create the look, his approach to face-mask makeup and his best piece of beauty advice.

Tell us about the beauty looks from SS 22?

The beauty look for the Spring-summer 2022 Ready-to-Wear collection featured a double eyeliner with an emphasis on the eyes outer corner where the space in between the eyeliner is as important as the liner itself. This was combined with a natural-looking complexion and lips.

Is there a particular focus? Skin? Eyes?

The focus was on the eyes with an emphasis on the double eyeliner.

Where did you get your inspiration from when imagining these particular looks?

The inspiration came from my conversation with Maria Grazia Chiuri. She wanted something sixties-inspired, but with a vintage, retro feeling. Hence the double eyeliner, combined with a totally nude face.

What are the main products you used to create the looks, for those of us looking to recreate at home?

I used the Dior Backstage face products (Face & Body Primer, Foundation and Powder-no-Powder) for natural looking skin, and the Diorshow On Stage Liner and Diorshow Khôl for the eye makeup look.

What’s the secret to fresh summer beauty?

Well-hydrated skin, luminous foundation, subtle use of colour and cute, playful eye catchers (like a creative eyeliner, or a touch of extra colour on lips or cheeks).

What’s your favourite makeup trend of the moment?

That people rediscover the pleasure of makeup after a period of full-time face masks. The joy of playing with colours and textures.

Do you have any face mask beauty tips? Should we be keeping it minimal? Or playing up what we can?

Make sure to wear transfer resistant formulas, like our Rouge Dior Forever Liquid lipstick for example. And focus on the zones that are not impacted by the mask.

What is your best piece of beauty advice?

Hydrate (from inside and out) and use caring products and products that have caring ingredients.
