As far as Australian homewares and jewellery brands are concerned, there a few major players that come to mind. One, happens to be Sydney-based Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy – the creative minds behind the beloved and highly covetable Dinosaur Designs. The brand's instantly recognisable creations are truly one of a kind; a sticking point that has heralded them trailblazers in the industry for over 35 years. If our wishlist wasn't extensive enough already, Dinosaur Designs has just released a new collection inspired by the malleable nature of clay.
The whimsical collection speaks to a key pillar in Dinosaur Designs' brand DNA; utilising simple shapes and earthy tones to formulate hand-crafted objects of desire. For the Clay collection, the brand has championed its iconic dual-ended vases; horn-like shapes in bone white, terra-cotta orange and mustard yellow. The small dishes and eye-catching bowls which have become synonymous with Dinosaur Designs receive a small update in the way of rounded 'feet', while their signature servers add the final touch to a complete set.
In true Dinosaur Design style, the brand's jewellery offering doubles as wearable art. For this particular collection, Olsen and Ormandy have fashioned bangles and bracelets in asymmetric ovals of various size – ideal for layering. A standout piece takes form in the way of a statement necklace threaded with pebble-like pendant; complimented by curved rings reminiscent of naturally forming shapes.
Following an almost four-decade stint in the arts industry, many might wonder if there's a secret to Dinosaur Designs' ongoing success. Speaking to RUSSH late last year, Ormandy credits their creative success to an absence of boundaries.
"Every creative pursuit requires creativity," he says. "Everything is a palate...yes there are industry restrictions, but if you're looking for creative opportunity within an existing structure... I think creativity has no professional bounds."
The Dinosaur Designs clay collection is now available to shop through the brand's official website.
