Summer might be on its way, but in other parts of the world, the allure of snow-capped mountains is beckoning. Whether you're a seasoned skier, or just there for the aprés of it all, for those making the pilgrimage to the snow, it pays to have a wardrobe that's not only functional, but chic. Luckily, today's ski (and snowboarding) fashion combines high performance elements — from water proof fabrics to protective features against icy temperatures — with stylish flair, so you can look as good as you feel as you carve down the slopes.
While the designs in ski fashion today are decidedly new, their inspiration no doubt comes from decades past. In the late '40s, Italian designer Emilio Pucci introduced the one-piece ski suit, redefining alpine style with the sleek, form-fitting uniform. By the '50s, the term 'aprés ski' had been coined, meaning skiers were on the hunt for pieces that not only served them on the slopes, but looked good socialising afterwards. In the '60s, this alpine aesthetic was solidified courtesy of photographer Slim Aarons, who set out photographing ski holidays in Courchevel and Aspen. This decade also saw the advent of spandex, ski goggles, and the snood (the latter of which is enjoying a welcome resurgence amongst Gen Z in 2025).
It's also no longer just heritage ski brands that are bringing us slope-ready looks. In addition to the likes of Canada Goose, Bogner, and Moncler, designers like Chanel, Prada, and Dior all have ski capsules that emphasise technical elements as well as traditional design codes for looks well suited to both snowy peaks and the city. The latest addition? A practical-chic collaboraiton between Jacquemus and Nike, no less.
