Beauty bag: take care of yourself with model Julia van Os

It’s what’s on the inside that counts. This New York-based, Dutch-born beauty has the industry tips and tricks that we all want to try, and here, model Julia van Os shares the importance of listening to your body and finding your own perfect routine.

My morning beauty routine is …
I like to keep my morning routine fairly simple (mainly because I love hitting the snooze button). I cleanse my face with a face wash by Earth tu Face. It’s made with all plant based organic ingredients and essential oils, I’ve been using it a lot. Then I use a moisturiser (right now it’s Biologique Recherche Crème Dermopurifiante) and eye cream by Biologique Recherche, brush up my eyebrows and curl my lashes, and that’s pretty much it!

My night beauty routine is …
I remove my make up if I’m wearing any with Bioderma, then I’ll use a face wash again. I exfoliate a couple of nights a week, and I wear a night cream or leave-on face mask. My favourite at the moment is Valmont Prime Renewing pack. It’s great for when you travel too, I love to leave it on during long flights. I really like doTerra’s Hydrating cream as a night cream as well.

Favourite products …
La Mer Crème de la Mer moisturizer
Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant
Clarins SPF50 Daily Facial sunscreen
Weleda Skin Food, always in my bag, especially when I fly
Dr. Spiller Jojoba Peeling cream
dōTERRA HD Clear, it’s a topical blend made from essential oils and it makes any spots/pimples disappear overnight
Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

My favourite form of exercise is …
Yoga! I do it almost every day. I love going for long runs too, I do Pilates and every now and then some (thai) boxing when I want to sweat. I switch my workouts up a lot, and I love trying new things. But my yoga practice is always consistent.

When my body needs to recover I …
Sleep. I think people underestimate the power of a good night sleep, it fixes everything. When you’re very busy, even a 20 minute power nap can make you feel like a new person.

My favourite detox …
An infrared sauna session is great after traveling, after a big night out or when you’re very sore.

My favourite retox …
Margaritas.

When it comes to beauty I always …
Keep it simple. There’s only so much you can accomplish with products. In the end it’s all about how well you take care of yourself on the inside, that’s going to show up on the outside. If you eat healthy, drink a lot of water and most importantly, are happy, it will show.

My beauty icon is …
Christy Turlington

The best advice on beauty I’ve received is …
Stay hydrated.

The best health advice I’ve received is …
Find what works for you! Every single person is different, so if a diet or specific workout works for someone else, doesn’t mean it will have the same effect on your body. I used to do a lot of heavy weight training and high intensity, because some of my friends got amazing benefits from it. But as a result I always felt exhausted and sore instead of energised. Over time I started switching to more low impact, low intensity workouts like walking, running, yoga, Pilates. I noticed that I always had energy and I felt really good in my body! Same goes for diets – there’s so much information out there these days that it can be really confusing to know what’s ‘healthy’. So just listen to your body. It takes some time to find your perfect routine, but it’s worth experimenting.

The product I can’t live without is …
The pink Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara. I’ve been using it for many years and never found a better one.
