The politics of beauty: taking back ownership of our appearance

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Beauty does not equal frivolity. Power can be portrayed through your appearance and as beautiful as your outer image is it’ll never match what’s going on inside. According to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “the key to beauty is the inside job.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez often grabs our attention. Though it’s never by attention grabbing. But through her powerful speeches on sexism, her fierce cross examinations and her trailblazing accent into congress.

And so when AOC released her full beauty routine this past week we again stopped and took notice. “In politics, there is so much criticism and nitpicking about how women and fem people present ourselves. Just being a woman is quite politicized…,” she explains in the midst of her skincare and makeup routine. “There’s this really false idea that if you care about makeup or if you care, if your interests are in beauty and fashion, that that's somehow for the least.”

The power of communication:

There are many ways to reach people. And politics is about bridging a gap. Finding a commonality with people from different spheres and forging forward, together. Whilst discussing issues such as the pink tax, the gender pay gap and queer rights she begins her routine with a toner.

“Our culture is so predicated on diminishing women, right? And kind of preying on our self esteem,” she tells. “And so it's quite a radical act and it's almost like a mini protest to love yourself in a society that's always trying to tell you, you're not the right way, you're not the right colour, you're not the right, you know, whatever it is.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez favourite beauty products:

Wearing a full coverage foundation has its place - say long days spent in press conferences - but for everyday life, AOC opts for NARS’ Pure Radiance Tinted moisturiser.  She argues that femininity is power and that along the way she “just learned that you cannot get your feelings of beauty and confidence from anyone but yourself.”

Being a woman in public office means both defending against injustices and staying open and receptive to the world you represent. When it comes to defending her skin against harmful UV rays it is a combination of Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ and Acure Radically Rejuvenating SPF30 Day cream she relies on.

“When you stand up and say, you know what, you don't make that decision, I make that decision. It's very powerful, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun.” And as for her signature shade of red lipstick? It’s Stilla Stay All Day Liquid lipstick in Beso
