‘Apple Cider Vinegar’ secures the most nominations ahead of the 2026 AACTA Awards

Apple Cider Vinegar has emerged as the dominant force of the 2026 AACTA Awards nominees, sweeping an impressive 20 nominations and positioning itself as the standout television production of the year. Spanning performance, writing, directing and key craft categories, the series has become the clear awards frontrunner in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive seasons on record.

The nominations were officially announced over the weekend for the 2026 AACTA Awards, with the ceremony set to take place on the Gold Coast as part of the broader festival program from 4 to 8 February at HOTA, Home of the Arts.

The series’ haul includes two Best Lead Actress nominations, alongside six supporting acting nods, cementing its reputation as both a critical and commercial success. Not far behind, established drama heavyweights The Newsreader and Mystery Road: Origin collected 12 and 11 nominations respectively, extending their long-standing dominance across both acting and technical categories. Both series now rank among the most awarded Australian dramas of the past decade.

This year’s nominations also reflect a notable convergence of global star power and homegrown talent. Internationally recognised figures including Nicole Kidman, Jacob Elordi and Sam Neill appear alongside leading Australian performers, underscoring the increasingly porous line between local and international screen industries.

In film, genre storytelling takes centre stage, with the horror feature Bring Her Back securing 16 nominations, including Best Film and Best Lead Actress. The film heads up a Best Film slate that spans large-scale thrillers, independent cinema and elevated genre.

Australian horror, in particular, continues its sharp ascent. Alongside Bring Her Back, the genre is further bolstered by Together, which collected eight nominations including Best Lead Actress for Alison Brie and Best Supporting Actor for Damon Herriman. The dual recognition signals a growing confidence in local horror as both a creative and commercial force, following recent international festival success for Australian genre filmmakers.

AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said this year’s nominations reflect “remarkable creativity and craft,” pointing to the rise of new voices alongside established industry figures.

The ceremony will broadcast nationally on Channel 10 on Friday 6 February, with extended coverage on BINGE and Foxtel the following night. Audience Choice, International and VFX nominations will follow later this month, but for now, all eyes remain firmly on this year’s breakout television powerhouse and the growing momentum of Australian genre cinema.
