It's good news for those who have an affinity for horror: Paramount and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster are cooking up a new entry for Paranormal Activity. Yep, the $900 million franchise is back in motion, and somehow, to our surprise, they are up to number eight? Clearly, we got lost somewhere along the way. This time around, James Wan, who proved he has some considerable chops directing Insidious, is jumping on board alongside James Blum and OG series creator Oren Peli.
Whilst the macabre appeal is not one for everyone, true fans are locked in. Our collective fascination with embracing horror films like Paranormal Activity is well documented, exposing our enthralment with the darkest crevices of the human psyche. Inherently sinister in nature, it’s difficult to describe what draws us into this ominous mediascape.
Over the years, each Paranormal Activity instalment has perfected the art of a terrifying slow-burn, quite literally keeping us at the edge of our seats. The global horror phenomenon began in 2007, and was slapped together on a $15,000 budget, but managed to gross a massive $200 million. In other words, it’s safe to say the series has been a hit. The latest addition, with just a slightly more lenient budget, will follow suit, one can only assume. Here's what you need to know.
What can we expect from the next Paranormal Activity?
Whilst the plot is being kept hush-hush, we are predicting that it will follow similar skin-crawling themes as the previous hits. A word of advice from someone who cannot handle a jumpscare or anything involving horror: don’t watch this on your own. Director James Wan said, “I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.”
