If you've been aching for a return to the golden era of romantic comedies that was the early 2000s, then boy do we have a treat for you. The writers of He's Just Not That Into You, The Vow, Never Been Kissed, and How To Be Single have put pen to paper once again, and are adding to this iconic cannon, with You Deserve Each Other, an enemies-to-lovers story starring none other than Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy. Here's what we know.
What is You Deserve Each Other about?
Based on the 2020 novel by Sarah Hogle, You Deserve Each Other reimagines the classic rom-com formula with the story of Naomi and Nick, a seemingly perfect couple who are about to get married, but have fallen completely out of love and are both too stubborn (or scared) to back out first. Rather than amicably split up, the pair decide to secretly sabotage the relationship until the other person calls it quits.
Then (because this is a rom-com, after all) what unfolds is a slow rediscovery of what brought them together in the first place. In other words, its a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers trope.
Who is involved?
The film pairs two of televisions biggest stars: Penn Badgley, who pivoted from Gossip Girl to You, and Meghann Fahy, who earned her Emmy nomination — and our collective admiration — for her role as Daphne in The White Lotus season two.
Behind the camera are rom-com veterans Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, who are directing the film and revising the screenplay. They’re joined by Brett Haley and Marc Basch, who co-wrote the original draft of the script. Production is being handled by Fifth Season, along with Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron of Likely Story.
When will it come out?
There’s no official release date yet, but with casting confirmed and production underway, You Deserve Each Other will likely find its way to screens sometime in 2026. As an Amazon MGM project, expect a global release and a streaming debut. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
