Defying the ordinary: 48 hours in the Yarra Valley

Bathed in the light of autumnal sun, the Yarra Valley is a refreshing haven that feels like it should be much farther away than it is. But in reality, it's just one hour outside the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. I took the surprisingly easy drive North East in one of Nissan's brand new Jukes. With more safety and easy-driving features than you can count, it was a pleasant cruise into the heart of the Yarra.

My home for the next 48 hours? Meletos, one of the most uniquely tranquil stays in the whole region – and the perfect place for a stay that truly defied the ordinary. From a rich Tuscan dinner celebrating Nissan's new 10-year warranty to a hot air ballooning adventure, it was the perfect rejuvenating mini-break. If you're looking for your next weekend adventure, here's how to spend a weekend in the Yarra Valley.

Where to stay

Meletos is arguably one of the most beautiful hotels in the region. After staying here once, it will definitely be my first choice upon my inevitable return. The whole precinct is gloriously decorated, with plenty to explore.

But of course, there are also some lovely AirBnBs in the area, if that is more your preference.

Where to eat

The in-house restaurant at Meletos is a must. I dined here as a guest of Nissan on my first night. It's a Tuscan-inspired affair with elegant, yet homely dishes and the perfect wine pairings. You'll also want to try the breakfast buffet if you stay overnight.

Ernie's Bar, also in the Meletos precinct is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink.

The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery is a must visit for some of the best sweets around. It does also serve a full brunch if you're looking for something more substantial.

Make your own ploughman's platter from the selection at the Yarra Valley Dairy. I also recommended leaving extra space in your suitcase to take some cheese home too.

What to do

The Yarra Valley is one of the best places in Australia to try hot air ballooning. It's an early start, but it's absolutely worthwhile. Once you finally get to see the sunrise as you're suspended midair, you won't regret that 4am alarm. Just remember to wear something warm.

One you're back on the ground, wine tasting is of course essential. TarraWarra Estate, Helen & Joey Estate and Yering Station are all favourites. Just remember, as you drive around the Yarra, some of the roads are uneven and unfinished – the Nissan Qashqai was the perfect car to explore the area.

Perched on a scenic hill is the TarraWarra Museum of Art. It's just the right spot to take a break from the vines.

A necessary stop on any relaxing weekend? A trip to the spa. I highly recommend the treatments at Il Massaggio.

Animal lovers though will want to make a pitstop at the Healesville Sanctuary.

Also, be sure to make some time to enjoy your hotel lounge and dive into a good book.

What to take

If you plan to drive into the Yarra and explore its leafy surrounds, you will need a reliable and comfortable car. For easy cruising, the Nissan Juke is laden with features. The Qashqai (pronounced Cash-Kai for those playing at home) is perfect for ultra-comfort. Or, the Nissan Z Nismo is the best option for those who like to see country roads at speed.

An easy-to-carry suitcase is an essential. I took the Kathmandu feather flight carry-on which scores big points as the lightest suitcase I've ever owned. I made the mistake of not bringing a puffer to stave off the cold though, and its a mistake I won't be making again. The Uniqlo ultra light down jackets are perfect.

Then of course, you need a few things to help you truly recharge and relax. A good book is a must and some pamper products. I love the Biotyspa sculpt kit for some gentle self care. And of course, you can't forget a sunscreen especially if you're planning a day in the vines or out ballooning. You'll need something hydrating to combat the dry air like Raaie's Sun Milk Drops.
