You might not have heard the name Nick Annas before – but remember it, because he has something big coming our way.
We've already established that we're living in the era of the internet-born filmmaker. Creatives like Kane Parsons and Curry Barker have proven the power of growing up online (on YouTube, specifically), bringing a deep understanding of Gen Z, today's most influential cinema-going audience, to their work. Now, Nick Annas is emerging as the next name to watch. While he didn't come up through YouTube, the 20-year-old Australian filmmaker shares that same instinctive grasp of internet culture, online storytelling and the visual language that resonates with younger viewers.
Which is why the news of his debut feature has us paying attention.
The 20-year-old Australian actor, screenwriter, and director is currently in post-production on his debut feature film, Crashout. And with plenty of buzz already building around the upcoming thriller, we thought we'd introduce you to the filmmaker behind it all. Get to know Annas, below.
He's been screenwriting since he was 14 years old
That's right – according to Variety, Annas' wrote his debut feature screenplay, Herschel, when he was 14. The script went on to make him a finalist for three major industry accolades: the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and the ScreenCraft Feature Fellowship.
It's no surprise that the achievement quickly established Annas as a talent to watch. Around the same time, he also became Australia's youngest published playwright through Playlab Theatre.
But this wasn't his first taste in the entertainment indsutry. Annas has been acting since he was a child, appearing in major productions including Peter Rabbit 2 alongside Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson, as well as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Crash Out is his debut feature film
Annas wrote the screenplay for Crashout when he was just 17 years old. The script didn't take shape in a traditional writers' room, but between classes at school and in his bedroom. Filming wrapped in April 2026, and the project is now in post-production, with a release expected in late 2026 or early 2027.
The satirical thriller follows three recently graduated high school students who find themselves stranded on a remote highway after a fatal car accident. Faced with the prospect of their futures being destroyed, they attempt to cover up their involvement by fabricating a found-footage film about the incident.
The cast includes Talk to Me and Leviticus star Joe Bird, Moana live-action lead Catherine Laga'aia and newcomer Evelyn Sims.
Crashout is produced by Enzo Tedeschi, known for his work in the horror genre, alongside Helen Tuck of Deadhouse Films. The film will be distributed throughout Australia and New Zealand by Umbrella Entertainment.

He's Australian
We've never been prouder to have emerging talent like Annas' come courtesy of Australia. From the RackaRacka brothers to filmmaker Adrian Chiarella and director Jennifer Kent, Australia has become a breeding ground for some of the most exciting voices in genre cinema, and Annas is shaping up to be the latest name to join that list.
He's also done plenty of work on home soil, including performing in the theatre production of Past The Shallows, based on Australian author Favel Parrett's book that was shortlisted in 2012 for the Miles Franklin Award.
His training is equally noteworthy. Annas studied at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), Australia's leading youth theatre company based in Sydney, before later earning a drama scholarship to The McDonald College, a specialist performing arts school.
He's a Sagittarius
Annas' was born on 25 November 2005 – meaning he falls under the fire sign ( November 22- December 21), but technically he also falls in the cusp zone as a Scorpio. Meaning he shares a few traits with the water sign.
He's signed with Anonymous Content
The latest accolade on Annas' resume is signing with Anonymous Content.
The American entertainment company, which represents some of the industry's most sought-after writers, directors and producers, has a strong track record of identifying emerging talent before they break into the mainstream.
He's in good company, too. Anonymous Content's roster includes acclaimed filmmakers such as Olivia Wilde, placing Annas alongside some of the most respected creative voices working today. The company appears equally enthusiastic about the partnership, describing Annas as "one of the most exciting young multi-hyphenate voices of his generation."
