For the cinephiles among us, you might already be digging to find release information about some of the biggest movies to be coming out of international film festivals right now. From the lineup at Telluride to this year's Cannes Film Festival winner Fjord , it has been an exciting year to say the least for cinema.
Woman Unknown is shaping up to be one of those films we're chasing down a release date for. The post-war drama, directed by Danish-Egyptian filmmaker May el-Toukhy, arrived at the 2026 Venice Film Festival as something of an outsider and just left with its biggest prize: the Golden Lion for Best Film. Its lead, Mathilde Arcel, also took home the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. A winning combo if you ask us.
Set in Denmark immediately after World War II, the film follows Marie, a young nanny and housemaid preparing to marry Christian, the wealthy widower who employs her. There is, however, something she hasn't told him: during the German occupation, Marie had a relationship with a German soldier. As liberation gives way to retribution, her carefully constructed new life begins to unravel.
So, naturally, the question is: when can we see it?

When will Woman Unknown get an Aussie cinema run?
For now, an Australian theatrical release date has not been announced. The film only just made its world premiere at Venice on 6 September 2026, before winning the Golden Lion days later, so its international rollout is still taking shape.
What we do know is that international sales are being handled by TrustNordisk, with distribution deals already secured across several territories. The film is also continuing along the festival circuit, including a selection at Toronto International Film Festival (which runs nearly until the end of September).
In other words: watch this space.

When will Woman Unknown be available to stream in Australia?
There is currently no confirmed Australian streaming release date or platform for Woman Unknown.
Given the film's festival run has only just begun, a streaming release will likely follow its theatrical and international festival rollout rather than arrive immediately. For the moment, there is no confirmed service to bookmark.
