An episode-based video format called ‘Series’ is coming to instagram

Instagram is evolving almost quicker than we can keep up with this year. The latest in a string of recent changes, however, is fairly exciting. According to murmurs on the app, Instagram is lining up plans to develop an episode-based video format called 'Series' that allows creators to organise Reels into episodes, making it easier for audiences to follow – and binge – content.

Here's what it means, whether you're a creator or a consumer.

What is Instagram's new Series feature?

Essentially, it looks like Instagram is taking its cues from the world of streaming. The platform is testing a new Series feature that lets creators group related Reels into a dedicated hub on their profile, making it easier for followers to watch videos in sequence rather than hunting down additional videos in a crowded feed.

The update has started appearing for a small number of creators, including @JuliaBroome, who has given a little insight into what it looks like.

According to Broome, Series creates a dedicated space on a creator's profile for recurring video content, complete with a "Watch Next" button that automatically directs viewers to the next instalment; much like watching episodes on a streaming service.

As Broome explains, "Instead of a viewer stumbling across one of your random Reels and then leaving your profile, they can now seamlessly binge your content in order, episode after episode."

Why is Instagram introducing it?

Instagram Series looks to be part of a broader shift by Meta to emulate how people consume traditional television on the app.

Last month, for example, Meta announced the expansion of Instagram for TV to Samsung Smart TVs in the US, alongside a suite of features designed to make watching Instagram a shared, living room experience. In a blog post, the company said it wants to help people "discover videos together, pick up where they left off, and share the experience with others in the room."

In other words, it seems like they're investing in features that make it easier to watch content sequentially, return to where you left off and ultimately spend more time on the app.

When will it be available?

At this stage, the Series feature appears to be in limited testing. There's not yet been an official announcement from Meta about a broader rollout, but we'll keep you updated if and when that happens.
