Another day, another Instagram update. Thankfully, the latest update is one that will actually benefit creators, and perhaps videographers, or users that edit videos a lot for the platform.
The app just announced the launch of 'First Draft', a new way to create reels. Apparently it's here to help and handle the early finicky video editing and trimming, in order to focus less on video trimming and more on the creative part.

What is Instagram's new 'First Draft' feature?

First Draft is a tool that gives users a starting point — or a draft — by automatically editing together the videos they have selected to create a reel.
After selecting your clips, you click the ‘First Draft’ button at the bottom of the app. This will generate an edited video using your selected clips. As explained in the Instagram post above, “Everything First Draft does is reversible, you can adjust or reorder anything before moving on. It handles the early video trimming so you can focus less on technical production, and get to the creative part sooner.”
If you’ve ever used TikTok’s option to sync your clips to a song, you’ll find First Draft works in a similar way, but instead syncs your videos based on their collective vibe and content.
Why is Instagram introducing it?
It’s here to take care of the more technical side of making Reels, giving users more time and control to focus on the creative direction. We can see this update being particularly useful for users who regularly make montages, talking-head videos and day-in-the-life videos.
When will it be available?
Like most Instagram updates, First Draft is rolling out gradually and is currently only available to iOS users. Check your Instagram app regularly, as the feature should be available to all iOS users by the end of the week.
