What is We Were Liars about?

The series borrows its plot from Lockhart's novel by the same name, which was first published back in 2014.

Set on a private island owned by the Sinclair family — an American dynasty of old money, impeccable manners, and generational secrets — the eight-part series follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her close-knit group of cousins and friends, affectionately dubbed “the Liars.” For a few months each year, the island becomes something of a playground for the elite, as Cadence and her family relocate their for their summer holiday. But after an accident shatters Cadence’s memory and fractures the group’s once-impenetrable bond, she returns to uncover the truth: about what happened, what’s been hidden, and who her friends really are.

Who is cast?

Emily Alyn Lind (best known for her work on the Gossip Girl reboot) takes the lead as Cadence, while Australian newcomer (and star of the upcoming Hunger Games prequel), Joseph Zada plays Johnny. Rounding out the fours "liars", Shubham Maheshwari stars as Gat Patil, and Esther McGregor plays Mirren. The adult cast adds gravitas, with David Morse as Harris Sinclair, the family patriarch, and Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, and Rahul Kohli rounding out the Sinclair clan.

Who else is involved?

We're hoping the creative team is indication enough that this series will be something of a balm for those of us wjo are missing the golden age of teen dramas. Julie Plec, best known for The Vampire Diaries, and Carina Adly MacKenzie serve as co-showrunners, while Lockhart herself is on board as executive producer to help translate the novel’s emotional complexity onto screen.

When does We Were Liars premiere?

Thankfully, it won't be a mammoth wait for this one. All eight episodes will be available via Prime Video on June 18, 2025.
