Could a Violet Bridgerton prequel be heading to our screens?

violet bridgerton

It's barely been a moment since Sophie Baek and Benedict Bridgerton overcame their many (many) obstacles to finally earn their happily ever after at the end of Bridgerton season four. But, as ever, Shonda Rhimes is already thinking about what comes next.

Speaking on an episode of Glass Half Full with Craig Melvin, the creator hinted that another prequel could be on the horizon. If it comes to fruition, it would join Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story in delving deeper into the history of the world that has captivated audiences since the series first arrived. So, which beloved character could be getting their own spin-off? None other than our favourite matriarch, Violet Bridgerton.

"That's an area we're excited about, and know that could be really rich and really mined well," Rhimes said about a possible prequel. "I've always said that I thought if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about... so yeah, that's possible."

Well, you heard it straight from the source. Below, everything we know about a possible (or dare we say probable) Violet Bridgerton spin-off.

Why Violet Bridgerton could be the perfect prequel lead

For fans of Bridgerton, the idea of a Violet-focused series makes a great deal of sense. Played in the main show by Ruth Gemmell, Violet has long been the emotional anchor of the Bridgerton family — guiding her children through London’s marriage mart with warmth and the occasional well-timed push.

But while viewers know her as a devoted mother of eight, we know very little about Violet before the events of the series. A prequel would open the door to exploring her own debut into society, her romance with the late Edmund Bridgerton, and the early years of the family that would eventually become the ton’s most beloved clan.

Who would play young Violet Bridgerton?

We know we're getting ahead of ourselves, but we (and the rest of the internet) couldn't help but speculate.

Several fans have pointed out there's a striking resemblance between actress Emily Bader and Ruth Gemmell. She's also a Netflix favourite, having recently starred in the streamer's adaptation of The People We Meet on Vacation.

Of course, there's also the possibility that the role could go to Connie Jenkins-Grieg, the actress who played a young violet in the Queen Charlotte series.

As for the role of Edmund, his absence from the Bridgerton universe thus far means there's a little more room to play, casting-wise. On Reddit, many fans are advocating for British-American actor Jonah Hauer-King to take on the role — the 30-year-old is best known for playing Prince Eric in Disney's musical fantasy film The Little Mermaid, and bears a pretty convincing resemblance to the Bridgerton 'sons', Jonathan Bailey, Luke Thompson, and Luke Newton.

What else do we know?

At this stage, not a lot. Rhimes has been careful to frame the idea as a possibility rather than a confirmed project. No casting announcements, production timelines or scripts have been revealed, meaning any Violet-centric prequel is still very much in the early stages of development.

Still, if the Netflix hit has proven anything over its four seasons, it’s that the appetite for more stories from this world shows no sign of slowing down. And if Rhimes does decide to return to the past once again, Violet Bridgerton may just be the next character ready to step into the spotlight.
