Tulum is truly a destination that has something for everyone. Along with Oaxaca, Acapulco and Mexico City, it's one of the most vibrant and special places in Mexico. Whether you’re a foodie, a beach lover, or someone who just wants to unwind, you’ll find so much to love about this magical place.
Where to eat
When I’m in Tulum, I absolutely love venturing out to the local restaurants and bars. Exploring these spots gives me a true sense of the vibrant culture and the warm, welcoming people. I highly recommend taking a walk and just diving into something as you explore. There’s something so special about dining where the locals eat. You get a deeper appreciation for the authentic flavours and traditions that make this place so unique.
But, I still have a few favourites. One of my all-time favourite restaurants in Tulum is La Brasa. They serve an incredible tomahawk steak that is absolutely to die for; perfectly cooked, tender, and bursting with flavour. It’s one of those meals you’ll find yourself dreaming about long after you’ve left.
Mateo's is also an essential. Order the ceviche, it's so fresh.
What to do
Beyond the amazing food, there’s something magical about just relaxing by the beach. I love soaking up the sun, feeling the soft sand under my feet, and listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore. It’s the perfect way to disconnect from the stresses of life and truly embrace the moment. Tulum has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and the energy there is unlike anywhere else I’ve been.
Playa Paraíso is a staple, but Playa Ruinas is another incredible spot because it's right near the Mayan ruins. There's so much incredible history in that area.
If you're in the mood for drinks and music, Papaya Playa Project is one of my favourite spots. I had a set there over New Year's Eve. It was so much fun.
Where to stay
When it comes to accommodations, Tulum has so much to offer. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious beachfront villa or a cozy boutique hotel, you’ll find something that suits your vibe.
That said, I personally recommend staying in the city. By doing so, you’ll immerse yourself in the local culture and experience the authentic side of Tulum. While the beachfront hotels are undeniably beautiful, staying in town gives you access to amazing hidden gems, from hole in the wall eateries to local shops and art galleries.
Muare Tulum and Hotel Barde are stunning options close to town. But if you're set on staying by the beach, Hotel Panamera has this gorgeous checkered pool you've probably seen on Instagram.
Papaya Playa Project also has luxury accomodation. You can get villas which are great to share with friends.
