I watched Top Gun: Maverick more times than I care to admit when it first came out. What can I say? I'm a plane enthusiast. So I practically got goosebumps when the franchise confirmed a third installation is en route.
But before you get carried away dreaming of more topless beach dancing scenes — and planes, obviously — we're getting to the bottom of everything we know about the upcoming film. All the important detaisl, below.
What is Top Gun 3 about?
It's still in the very early stages — the film doesn't even have a title yet. But it's being billed as a sequel to Top Gun Maverick which, you'll remember, followed Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) returning to the Top Gun flying school to train a new cohort of pilots for a specialised, dangerous mission.
Who is involved?
It was confirmed at 2026 CinemaCon that Tom Cruise is back to revive his role as Maverick, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also on board.
As for the rest of the Maverick cast — that remains to be seen. We're crossing our fingers (and toes) that Miles Teller will return as Rooster, the son of Maverick's late friend, Goose. We're also hopeful that Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Monica Barbaro might reprise their roles.
The role of director also seems to be unfilled at the moment, with no word yet whether Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is planning on returning to the franchise.
When will it come out?
This is another key detail we're yet to receive. Top Gun films are historically massive productions, so with this one in the early stages of development, we're guessing it could be some time before it actually hits our screens. If we had to make a prediction, we'd say it could be with us in early 2028. We'll keep you updated as we know more.
